Oil can drain plug

I read a post somewhere about the "perfect" oil change. In their post they talked about a drain plug on the oil filter can. My 8N (sn 486xxx) does not have a drain plug on the oil filter cannister. Is this unusual, or was the drain plug only on earlier models?

I've recently purchased a '51 8N engine and a '52 engine and neither of these have drain plugs on the filter canister. My first 8N, a '52 did have one and subsequent others '47 built through '49 have had them. I just presumed they all did until I bought these last engines without. At this point I don't know what the deciding factor was. I was thinking it was the later models that didn't have them but then I remembered my old '52. Geez, all that typing to say "I dunno!"

The 2N engine on my 8N has an oil cannister that [i:654c4848f0] does[/i:654c4848f0] have the drain.

Hope that adds to the murkiness.

According to your ser #, you have a 1952 8N. On later production 8Ns, they changed the oil filters to accept the oil line from the filter to the govenor, for oiling the gov. insides. Where that oil line is attached to the filter, is where the older 8Ns drain plug would have been.
If you have the gov. oiling line, you prob. do not have a drain plug on the filter.
I THINK!!!!!
On the earlier production "N"s, there was a return line out the bottom of the filter can, to the side of the block, and the drain plug was/is located on the bottom/side of the filter.
Clear as mud????? RIGHT???

Seems to me that if you have the one with the oil line to the GOV., you already have a drain. When you shut off the engine, the oil will drain from the can into the GOV. with the help of gravity.

Take the can off every now and again and wash it out,,, spray wipe and go,,, the drain is not worth a damm enny ways,,, still leaves some crud in the bottom of the can,,, I am think'n about a spin on,,, spin off,,, throw the sucker in the trash can,,, mite look good side my alternator,,, whatcha think...

Removing the oil line to the gov,,, won't git it done,,, suck'it out,,,

I'm with Hobo on this. Shortly after I got my 51 8n I did an oil change and took the whole filter assembly off. There was about 2 inches of sludge in the bottom of the can. In fact, the little spacer that the filter sits on was completely buried in it. I'm afraid of what the bottom of the pan looks like!

BTW - 51 8n sidemount can has no plug - just the line to governor.

Thanks for the information. Yes, my 8N is a 1952 model and has the oil line to the governor. I have just been removing the can and washing it out when I change oil.
