Oil change question

When you change oil in your tractor do you change it when the engine is up to temperature or do you change it when the engine is cold and why?

I change oil hot... for the following reasons:

1. All the dirt and impurities will be mixed up and suspended in the oil.
2. All that oil will run out faster, not giving the impurities/dirt time to settle out.

I used to always change cold, thinking that the oil would have more time to drain down into the pan and out - however that gives the impurities/dirt time to settle out in the valve train area and also down in the bottom of the oil pan. "And that's all I have to say about that." -Forrest Gump

As Steve says hot it just plain flows better and also takes more hot the sludge etc out at the same time.

I drain it hot and generally let it sit over night to get as much as possible out. A fellow employee ran a test on a medium duty diesel engine and it took 2 hours for the oil to drain down from the cyl head. This convinced me that the local "Jiffy Lube" places were to be avoided and that the vehicle/tractor should set for a least a couple of hours.

Jiffy Lube is to be avoided because they rip people off! They have been known to overtighten oil plugs, not tighten filters, not change filters, not fill oil to proper level, and scam people into additional BS services people don't need. Most quick-lube places employ teenagers who don't know squat about being mechanics. There are a select few that might have decent employees, but I would be wary.

Interesting! Thank you for your replies. I've always drained my oil hot for the very same reasons most gave but I guess I just didn't know for sure if there was good reason to do so. Thanks again.
