oil change

I'm doing my first oil change on my IH 2444 and was wondering what kind of oil I should run. She has a gas motor and she's a smoker.(just how I like 'em Any recommendations? Thanks, Kyle

my new filter came with a rubber seal but one did not come out with the old one. Can anybody tell me if I am suposed to use it or does the oil cover seal itself in the groove of the base? I tried to fit it in and it just does not seem like its suposed to be there. Thanks, Kyle

Are you sure the old one is not in there? Take a dental pick and scratch around in groove. Other wise is old gasket stuck to old filter?

The tractor has a filter cartridge, so the housing rests on the gasket, not the filter. The gasket fits in the groove in the cast platform, then the housing rests on that. The old gasket definitly did not come out nor was it stuck to the housing. Does anybody know of any instances when the gasket is not used? Is it even possible to get a seal from metal on metal? I certainly don't think that its just a metal to metal seal there. Do you have a manual for this tractor? If not by all means get one it should cover this. If all else fails go back to the dealer where you got the filter and ask them. JMHO. Mike.

If there"s no seal there and it wasn"t leaking then you"ve answered your own question about can you obtain a metal to metal seal...Thing is I"ve never seen a cartridge type filter on any machine I"ve worked on that didn"t use a seal on the canister. Many cartridge type filters can be used in different applications (ie-with different canister housings). That said their often packaged with the "most commonly" used seal ring or rings for whatever housing that the filter mfg origionally made the filter for. In other words the one you"ve got may simply not have the right seal ring for your application. I know NAPA has a section in the back of their filter book that shows the various seal rings available, by size, if you have trouble finding the right one. Good luck.
