Oil Filter - Ford 861

I recently purchased a Ford 861 tractor and need to change the oil. What type of oil should I use and does the filter that sits below the cap need to be replaced each time as well? Do these need to be purchased from an implement dealer or can you find this in ordinary auto parts stores?

If you don't change the oil filter every time the oil is changed why bother to change the oil just my opinion. They should be available at any Big A NAPA or other parts house. I'd use a good 20-20w or 10-30 If a diesel then a 15-40 or in winter 20-20w and 30 in summer the multi viscosity oils can be run year round though.It will depend on where you live and what your using the tractor for. If in nothern Canada might even go to a 5 weight in winter.

"the filter that sits below the cap" -- Do you mean the mesh filter under the breather cap (which is also where you add oil)? That one only needs to be cleaned. The oil filter on the left side of the block should be replaced at each oil change. Could be original style canister type, or often converted to spin-on. Spin-on is New Holland 300 Dual, Car Quest 51515, Fram PH8A, etc., not sure about the cartridge type. (although those are available at CarQuest or Napa,too.) Book calls for 10w in cold weather, 30w in warm weather, but that was printed before good multi-weight oil was available. I run 15w40 year-round in my tractors. (northern WI)

Wade. I think you are talking about that steel wool type that is on the fill cap, it dont need changed very often unless it fills up with crud from engine having too much blow by. Ther is another one on the valve cover that is very similar. I just wash mine out with carb cleaner and blow them out and reuse.

I run 2000 and 4000 4 cyl engines built in the mid '60's which should be the same engine as yours. Other than 3000's with the large industrial filter, all my fords use the Motorcraft spin on #FL-1A as does my Ford 460 cu in hay truck and my Dodge 360 p/u.
