Oil Filter Question

Hi All: I was browsing that big internet auction site searching 8N and found a Oil Filter Mounting Bracket that uses I think an FL1A filter. There is 2 types one the filter is horizontal and other is vertical.
Has any one used one of these. It would sure speed up oil changes but is that type of filter OK with the old time oil system in the 8N.

Speeds up filter change" once a year at what cost???!!!! Horiz: when removed it dribbles a quart of oil down side of engine & onto ground/floor. Save your money for smarter expenditures.
 
My "52 8N had one of the vertical-mount ones installed when I
bought it. PO had been trying to "chrome-ify" everything he
could on it. It seeped constantly (which kind of defeated the
purpose on the shiny chrome housing, since it was always
greasy five minutes after cleaning it up), so I bought an original
filter canister from John Smith and put it back to original - no
more seeping or dribbles!

You can have the spin-on adapter for the cost of shipping if
you want it.

I agree.

both a fl1a and a fram c3/c3p are 3-4$ oil filters.

if you change once a year like most people do, it will take you a lifetime to perhaps overcome the expense at 1 oil change at a time.

how much time does it really save removing a bolt and lifting a filter out, vs unscrewing one?

a minute on the top end?.. maybee?

your money...

By-pass filter. Supposed to do a GREAT job of filtering small particles. Haven't had personal experience but when I worked for VW back in the '60s they did a great job of keeping the oil clean on VWs
 
One advantage to the screw on ones, is you can get the filter at any auto parts store. Around here it is hard to find the cartridge type w/o having it ordered - you can get it anywhere though but you might have to wait...

ep, shouldn't be obscure.......fits dozens of tractors, construction eqmt engines, Jeep, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, and on & on.
 
I don't know myself. But it seems like that question was bought up
here before. Seems there was a discussion on back pressure. The screw on filters have less resistance. Which in turn meant more oil
going thru the filter and less going thru the bearings. Maybe
someone that knows more will chime in. The last discussion was enough to make me quit thinking about adding one.
 
Thanks Guys. I'll just stick with stock.
I was not looking at savings and/or availability of the OEM filters. It's more I was wondering about the convienance and if the FL1A had the same restriction and would let oil go where it was supposed to go.

Again the votes are in and I'm taking the advice and just leaving it the way FOMOCO intended.

Since the filter system is a partial flow type the FL1A filter won"t be correct. You"ll have to use one with a control orifice in thefilter itself. NAPA /Wix has them for sur ebut I don"t recall the number off the top of my head.

erry has it on need to use restriction type filter with those adapters. The particular filter number will depend on whose adapter is being used.....not all the same.
 
OK, let’s clarify a few things since there is quite a bit of misinformation floating around on the web about adapters and what is really required.

First off, there is no special “orifice,” or “restrictor,” or “special filter” needed to maintain oil pressure with an N lube system. Open you parts books and look for this mystery restrictor. There is none. Pull out your filter element and look in the canister. Do you see an orifice? No. There are two ports in the housing which are tapped for 1/8-NPT. The fittings which thread into them are nothing special. They are an inverted flare fitting with a 3/16” hole through the center….this is the standard for that size/style of fitting.

What creates/maintains oil pressure in these systems is the fact there is several feet of small diameter tubing. Take the oil filter feed tube off and blow in it. It’s pretty hard to push much flow through it at all. So, the metering of oil through the filter is perfected simply with the architecture of the system and not through a calibrated orifice. The fact of the matter is you could put on virtually any head or filter and it would be transparent to the operation of the system and not affect the oil delivery to the bearings, etc.

With that said, both of the custom filter adapters for the N’s do include orifices. They include necked down regions which are 3/16” in diameter. Since these do not have any smaller cross sectional flow area than any other portion of the bypass filtration system on these engines, they really do no harm and are more to address the “myth” that a restrictor is needed in the N system than anything else.

With all that said, there are some nice benefits to the spin on adapter. In addition to the convenience of being able to buy filters at virtually any filter retailer (Walmart, Target, Farm and Fleet, etc), they make for a very nice reasonably mess free oil change. Probably the largest reason, however, is the fact you now have options in terms of the filtration you put on your engine. You can select a make of filter which provides far superior filtration to the original filter. If you look up the specs of the original filter, it has a 32 micron rating. Now take a Fram extra guard which has a 94% multipass test score and a 10 micron rating. 32 micron to 10 micron is huge. Add on the fact that you can now install a filter with more filtration media (remember that filtration efficiency is related to the face velocity of the oil through the media – the more media, the lower the velocity and the better the efficiency) and a spin on adapter will take your N to a whole new level of filtration.

I personally want to get the most number of hours I can out of an overhaul. If I can make a small investment to improve the filtration and reduce engine wear, I feel it will pay dividends in the long run in terms of down time true out of pocket cost.

I don't know who mystery man "e" happens to be, but you are dead wrong & are the person promoting "misinformation", sir!

I say that you haven't done this "looking" yourself. The orifice is there & the flow through the lines & fittings is different with & without said orifice (I have measured it). Reputable/big name spin on adaptor makers such as WIX DO in fact sell special bypass filters WITH a metering orifice to be used with their adapters.

You sound like a seller of some el cheapo non-engineered adapters to me. I've seen one of those sold on e-bay that even had the flow going through the filter element in the WRONG direction!

I guess I couldn't be further from the truth! A few months ago I was over at a buddies house when he was installing a horizontal spin on adapter. We went over both the old and new filter headers to compare. We figured the clean oil flowed under the "tin hat" on the bottom inside of the housing when exiting the housing. We didn't see the small drilling you pointed out.

Not sure, however, why you need to bash the "el cheapo" adapter sold on ebay. Do you have something against the guy who makes those? It made no difference in the oil pressure made by buddies engine and now allows him to stock one less filter for his fleet. I thought it was a nice upgrade which allows him to put on a higher efficiency filter.
