bought a craftsman gt 18hp twin rider to put the 42"snowblower on the motor is a 18hp twin kohler magnum got it running now need to change the oil and filter what weight oil shud i use. do i have to use the kohler oil filter or is there other filters that might be less expensive? what size battery should i purchase for it? the battery i used for initaly getting it running seems a little bit small

I use 10w40 diesel oil. It has the additive that helps the non roller cam. I also us a non Kohler filter. Don't remember what #. If no one comes back I can go look in a few days. The first non Kohler filter some one told me about was too long. It is in a Snapper ZTR. I had to find a shorter filter to fit in the space between frame and filter base. If you have plenty of room I would use a longer filter, more surface area in filter.

If you have the room I would use a car battery. I have Walmart's best battery in my old Wards tractor and the battery is 9 years old. I use the battery with the side mount battery connections since the vertical posts hit the hood. You can see the battery in this pic. Hal

I am a believer in using OEM filters in everything. A couple of bucks either way ain"t gonna break the bank. Many times OEM filters are cheaper than aftermarket.

i use wix or napa filters with shell 15- 40 rotella. wix & napa filters cost around $6.00 to $7.00 auto supply. oem filter cost between $10.00-$15.00 in garden tractor shop.

I have a Gravely 812 that I have re-powered with a Kohler KT-17 Series II. I use it to blow snow. The oil is Mobile ONE 10W-30.

I run 10W-30 Mobil 1 extended range oil year round in my 20 hp Kohler twin powered Cub 2518. I would get the Wix or Napa filters (Napa made by Wix).

I hate paying big bucks for Cub filters. After all, they don't make them for themselves.

I have been in a filter factory, Cummins filtration, and see blank filters comming off the line. Then they went to another line and
were labeled for several different brands, and
one of them was John Deere..all the same element!

I would put a OEM filter on it, the way I look at it, if the engine fails because of the filter, no nmatter the age, Kohler will stand behind it, WIX, NAPA and all the others will NOT. The density of the paper in a Kohler filter is a lot better than aftermarket filters. Also the bypass in non OEM filters may ro may not be the same and will start bypassing un filtered oil where the OEM Kohler filter will not. But, it is your tractor, your choice as to if saving 4.00 is worth destroying a good engine over
