i have a 52 side mount 8n it sat most of the winter.I fired it up it ran good. I shut it off to check oil and coolant and it had oil in the radiator.can someone tell me what is going on?
Can i use it to rake some sticks &limbs up.Thanks

It's not impossible but doesn't happen frequently due to the block design - There isn't any oil above the block in a flat head - Oil in the cooling jacket, would require a failed head gasket and/or a crack in the block to permit communication between the two.

What makes you believe you have oil in the radiator? A multicolor sheen on the water could be oil but it could also be water pump lubricant.

How does it run?

May start with a compression test - Post back if you need help with that.

I dont know for sure that it is motor oil.when i checked the coolant i could see black droplets of what i thought was oil.then i ran it for 20 min or so checked again and it was all oily very black looking. it runs fine.good power no blue smoke at tail pipe.should i may be drain radiator flush and refill.

Had same problem with a non-running late 8N. Found both blown head gasket and cracked block. Had to part out the tractor...sad day. May you luck be MUCH better than mine,

I had the same problem. I had cracks in #3 & #4 cylinders. I ended up replacing the block and having a rebuilt engine. If I knew that was the problem I would have junked the tractor and bought another. It would have been a lot cheaper.

cbd.........would it surprize you to learn that green anti-freeze has waterpump lube in it and it "floats" as a sheen on toppa yer radiator water. You can also gitt waterpump lube as an additive ...but... you can also gitta sheen from leaky headgasket. Ittza hard to tell long distance (grin) First thing to check, yer sparkies. Is ennyone "steam cleaned"? BAD headgasket. 2nd thing, re-tighten yer headnuts (60ft/lbs) or headbolts (70ft/lbs) Iff'n you can, vacuum the scum floating on top of yer radiator water with soda straw. Now runner again, more black scum??? Probably waterpump additive. Lite scum??? headgasket leaking. Do the dreaded compression test. Ford specs: 90psi min (dry) report back ........Dell
