My son told me today on any given day his school has more then one gun on the grounds. Other then what the cops have. Said when thye have a lock down one of the cops who dates a girl that was i school last year opens his mouth to her and the she lets the students know its going to happen so no gun/drugs that day. Don't want to call from my home phone or they will know who I am but sure would like to know the school would be safer

I urge you to report this to your state police. Even the officers relationship with the girl is cause for concern. Being an outside law enforcement agency, they are better able to deal with possibility that a local city police officer is behaving irresponsibly.

If you think there's anything to it you just straight up call the principal and talk to him. Request to stay anonymous to others if you want, but good people needn't be afraid to do the right thing. And no, I am not naive - spent 20 years in a patrol car - but also know that when good honest people don't do the right thing because they are afraid, we have all lost out. On the other hand nearly every school I ever worked in or around had the same rumors all the time and rarely anything to them.

Old don't call from your home or cell phone, they will know who you are quicker that you are able to make the call.

I would use a pay phone, wear gloves, talk through a towell, call the police barracks or station in the school's area and express your thoughts, remind them that you are a TAXPAYER and you pay their salary.

That officer should be suspended without pay, or fired on the spot if he is indeed doing this.

Write to the school board (BUT don't sign your name) they should be able and willing to put a stop to this very quickly.

Write a letter to your local news paper, if you don't get results.

Do not use your childs name in anything you say about the matter at all.

By the way, being the parent places you beyond the childhood circle of pals where you need to care whether they know it was you who demanded responsible behaviour. Personally, I would be very clear in telling my son that I am demanding that action be taking to deal with this issue. I understand that children do not want their peers to know that they are tattle tales, but you are an adult. When you call proper authority, you are not tattling, you are demanding action. If the kids at your son's school don't like your decision, what are they going to do, not go with you to the prom? I feel that kids need top know that we adults are authority. We are not their peers. We are their parents, and we are above their social orders. My children need to worry whether I will be upset with their actions. I am not concerned that they will disapprove of mine.

You want to hear something really crazy? Here in SD, the state legislature was considering a bill that would have allowed guns on all state campuses. They thought having a rifle or shotgun in a dorm room would not cause any harm. It was voted down once but I thought I heard tonight it had came up again. I bet they would all duck under their desks if someone walked into the capital packing a 12 gauge.

Guns in the right hands are ok but guns in the wrong hands are trouble. The laws as far a conceal carry are just fine if they make sure the person isn't down right crazy. One problem now days is that people blame the gun not the person that has the gun. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. I don't think you have to report it. I think the school probably knows that there is probably guns on the grounds. As a whole, schools are still pretty safe, but these shootings are getting far more common. In what happened today, the shooter didn't even go to Northern Illinois University!. In some cases, students having guns would be a good thing so they could defend themselves when something like this goes down, however I don't think that guns do belong in schools. I don't think the system is broken to tell you the truth. I mean, there isn't anything that could be done without making life miserable for everyone to improve the saftey of schools. You would have to start treating people like criminals with patdowns, searches and make them pass through metal detectors with armed guards watching, put bars over all the windows. Install MORE video cameras. I'm sorry, but I don't wish to be treated like a prisoner and I question just how effective these extra measures would be at stopping a mad man who's desire is murder-suicide. I blame the media for making such a big deal out of these stories, yes they are big news, but seems to me like they are fueling all these copy cats and thats why there is such an increase in school shootings.

That one you might want to report. I would just contact the school directly and talk to them. When they know who is making the claims they will put a lot more stock in it rather than some completely anonymous phone call that could easily be a prank. But, I would ask them to not tell the kid or his parents who told on him, which they probably wouldn't anyways, but it would be a good idea to remind them of this anyways. Kinda sad that the kid will get busted IF he has the gun on him and he will be served with a mighty hefty penalty for bringing a gun to school which will probably ruin his future. Hard enough to get a job with a sqeeky clean record these days.
Its a tough decision to make and one that if you don't tell and he ends up shooting someone, you are going to feel responsible, but as the same time you hate to ruin a kid's future. You could try talking with the parents of the kid who has the gun, but god knows how that could turn out, they might thank you or they might get nasty and you suddenly got enemies for both you and your son.

As an avid shooter, hunter, and also concealed cary permit holder, guns are not what kill people, its the person holding the firearm. Firearms are a great tool and reacreational hobby when used properly, but are very dangerous when used improperly and/or in the wrong person's hands. After you pull the trigger, there is no calling the bullet back, its gone.

Guns is a touchy issue anymore. All of my kids know how to shoot and handle a gun properly. Iam a concealed weapon permit holder myself. Around here except for meth our schools are pretty safe no shootings or threats so far (knock on wood).

Close this area ever came was back in the early 90's at a council meeting, sum nut came in pulled a gun and said he was gonna kill some council members. Two council members pulled there own guns out and told him to drop it or he was leaving in a body bag. He dropped the gun and tragedy averted. Those council members were held as hero's until sum nut job, who moved to the area from New York, got to running his mouth saying he was scared of the two council members, " who knows they could get upset with a person's comments and shoot them at a meeting". was his exact words. needless to say those two members didnt get re-elected the following year. Made me and a lot of other people sick after the election result.

We've become over reactionary. A second-grader kisses a girl and it's harrassment. Bring a toy gun to school and you get expelled. Having guns at school is serious.

My son attends Michigan State and every time I hear about a campus shooting, I get more concerned. Any nut-job could flip out at any time: mad at prof who failed him, girl troubles, etc. We all dealt with our problems without guns.

I remember a kid I served in Viet Nam with. Nice guy...until he bought a .45. He became Cowboy Copus--we worked on base not out in the field. Waving it around in a bunker while we were on red alert did it for me. I told him what a hot dog he had become and I didn't want to be near him when he had that pistool. A few days later he sold it. Nice guy again.

Somehow, make the police department/school aware of what's going on. Just make sure you have all the facts in this sue-happy society.

You do need a little more imformation . When I`ve ever had any problems elected officials can be alot of help . School Board Members , County Comissioners , they have to help with this type of thing if they want to be re-elected but they do need more than rumors to go on . Be sure they know about the dirty cop . A conserned grandma on the school board will take action .

Someone needs to come down fast and hard. Wouldn't fool with the locals or even the State cause you don't know how thick the blood is. I'd do a call straight to the FBI and /or ATF. I'm all for the right to keep and bear arms, but it doesn't belong in a school. There are some real take our country back freaks out there no matter where you are. Some think Elvis is still alive and living in Vegas and are willing to shoot you if you argy. Could be the kids parents don't even know. If especially a teenager flips out and has a gun, I wouldn't want any friends or family in the area.
After you report it, some of the folks that still think Jesse James was everything except an outlaw may not talk to you anymore, but at least their kids will still be alive to tear up your mailbox.

Well Old, I gotta say, (if this is a college)one of them students with a gun on them ( a legal gun and an owner with a permit and the proper gun ethics), could just be able to utilize their gun to save the lives of many some day, including your son. If its high school that is different, but I do beleive faculty should be armed. I fear that with the low morals, lack of discepline, spoiled overindulgence and lack of respect that that todays youth( no not all of them, I know there are still good kids out there), things such as the shooting willhappen more frequently. Guns arent the problem, not taking the time and love to raise our youth is the problem. Old, I definatly would notify administration at the school and the law enforcement internal affairs know about the tip offs, that should not be happening. May God keep you and yours safe.

Old, does the school have a "SRO" school resource officer? I encourage my children to report a fire arms or narcotics to the nearest adult because they do not have their place in schools. My children go to a "country type school" where shot guns and rifles are brought to school during deer and turkey season which I can understand. What purpose would a student have a glock or any other handgun in school. Your son should REPORT THIS ASAP! Glocks in a childs hands only equal trouble not to mention they are very dangerous handguns if you dont know them. If you email me, I can get you some information on who to contact directly in your area law enforcement wise, I personally would not wait for that and corner the principal or on campus school resource officer. They probably have an idea what is going on already.

Why are you concerned that they know if it came from your house? Stand up and do what's right! You have no reason not to. Guns and teenage hormones are not a good thing. It's not like the kids are out in the woods hunting or (constructive) target shooting. Absolutely no reason for a kid to bring a gun to school. My how times have changed, I am 29 and when I was in high school most every truck in the parking lot had a gun in it and every one knew it.

Times have changed so here is what I would say,, if you don"t want to call My from a pay phone, go to wal mart and get a $20 throw away cell phone and call state police. Can"t remember how old your son is, if he is still in high school call your school board member or send them a letter.

I know why you don"t want your name on any of this. My county is pretty bad about this stuff. If you call in a pot patch or meth lab you get pulled over every time you go to town if you know what I mean.

I won't explain that guns can kill, seems pretty straight up that you know this. Seems the bigger question is why are the guns in school. If the boys hunt then that might slip by.

I'm guessing they think they are all that --as the kids say nowdays. Seems you and your son are on a good page for him to tell you that information. What is his gutt feeling as well as his friends? I sure hope you inform your son on what we all think he is a good kid for letting a parent know what is going down.

Why would you get pulled over in your county for reporting criminal activity? If your locals are dirty I'd go up a couple of notches to the Feds, they don't give out traffic citations.

Now most of the time, you guys educate me on all kinds of things I"ve yet to fully understand. I offer my point as an attempt to "pay back" some debt.

In today"s world, lawsuits for everything, I think that the appropriate response would include a conversation with the building Principal, outlining both the gun carrying and the tip-off. Tone of the conversation would probably be best held with a concern for the students tone. If you feel as if you are getting brushed off, drop out that your secondary concern is for the school itself, and the loss of time to lawsuits, which could be spent working on education. I don"t mean to say throwing out the lawsuit card is the answer, but with the No Child Left Behind act, educators are seriously focusing on the best results for effort expended aspect of their days.

I am an administrator in a Jr. Sr. High school. We are concerned about these things, and with a serious report, we can search. We cannot search without just cause. We normally do this without revealing sources. We also have a large body of student hunters, and the deal is this - if you forget and bring your gun to school, tell us, we will return it to parents, and we all go about our lives. If we discover a gun, it is an automatic one year school district expulsion, with charges being brought.

I think most administrators are level headed, and want to stem problems at the lowest level possible. If this doesn"t work, I would skip the rest of the educators, and go to your state representative with the same conversation.

I go to a school, where there is less than 300 people 7-12th grade, so we don't have this problem with guns and knives. Oh sure, I know that some people have ciggerates and maybe some other drugs, but everyone knows who the people are, stoner's as we call them, so they just kinda stay in their own group. I'm a softmore, and there is only 42 people in our grade. The juniors have the most with a wopping 65-70, lol. The bad thing about a small school, there arent very many hotties to look at. lol.
