Old case SO for $400

Got a guy ready to scrap a clean SO, I think about 1947? Says he want's $400 and I may have to take him up on it just to keep it from scrap. It needs front tires and the engine is free. Mag is rusted and fiber gear teeth bad. What kind of clutch do these have ? kinda like JD model D? Any idea how heavy they are? I already have 2 Farmall A's, 1 Super C and single front H to keep me busy! A SO would be a little off color in the herd? Any idea's on how too talk the wife into a extra tractor that is not running? Hope anyone can help, Dan.

I have a 1949 SO. Nice little tractor. The clutch runs in oil, almost indestructable. If it were closer to me, I would not hesitate to give $400 for it I would guess the weight around 3000 lbs. Good luck, don't let it get a way.

Never was around an SO but many SC's. It should have a hand clutch just like the SC and a handy tractor to have around. Fix it up and paint it and it will add a little color to your collection!!!! Plenty of help here to resolve your problems as you go.

Only about 1800 SO's were made. Horsepower and weight should be similar to a McCormick OS4 or W4.

Congrats on the find.

Further to comments below, if it still has the full orchard tin its a real keeper. From what I see and have read the orchard tin is hard to come by and makes an SO even more desireable/collectable if it has it.

It will weigh a little more than your H as Case built them a tad bit heavier than Farmall and JD.

Just tell her you have to order a replacement part. When you pick it up the "part" tell her you couldn't resist the deal of the whole enchalada. Or tell her the tires are worth that much and you need them on something else, but just never take them off. If it has some or all of the sheetmetal that would be a heck of a deal. It should be worth 400 in scrap if you had to in the future.

Just bought a 45 SO a month ago. From what I have read they are actually about 4500 pounds. I like mine a lot, it is easy to drive and parts are fairly easy to get. If it has the orchard metal, buy it. Mine came with the clamshell fenders, and from what I can find is that most came that way. Good little tractors.
