Old equipment value

I am looking for some advice from the experts about some equipment I have. My Grandfather ran an excavating company and has alot of old machines that he left after he died last october. I have to sell some of them to clean up the farm and I am wondering if anyone can tell me about their aproximate value. I have a guy that wants to buy anything I will sell, where it sits, running or not, for $150 a ton. I don't really know if that is a good deal or not, it sounds great because he will move everything and I dont have to show stuff to a million "tire kickers". If you could guide me in the right direction that would be great. Here's a list of some stuff I will be getting rid of. Also, I should ad that my Grandpa took great care and did great maintenance on his machines, but they've been sitting for a long time;
-D8 14A with power tilt blade and ripper, has a almost new set of tracks for it. (not running, clutch stuck)
-Lateurneau belly scraper??? (not worth much)
-3 DW21 Tractor Scapers (had one running about a month ago, all need work)
-Old D2 tractor w/o blade (good shape, but clutch stuck)
-D8 14A for parts
-40's? Linkbelt Speeder Dragline (was running about 2 years ago)
I have more but thats what I selling now.
I know aprox. what they weigh, but does it sound like a bad idea to just sell them all for scrap wiehgt?

Even if you just sold the almost new tracks off the D8, you'd get way more than scrap price for it. You might be able to sell the ripper as well. I would advertise all the pieces for sale complete. It sounds like most of it could be put in useable order without too much work. Advertise in the classifieds on this site. There's tons of people on here that love fixing up older machines and lots of experts that can help them in the process. Don't sell them for scrap! Dave

Alot of the answer to your question depends on whether you have the time, knowledge, funds, etc to either repair the equipment to running condition or let it sit and part it out. If neither of those options works for you, and you can sell everything for scrap value, and the guy buying has no problem putting all of the effort into getting everything moved, then it"s not a bad deal as far as deals go.

Beyond that those machines are definately worth more than scrap value,especially the crane if it"s in decent shape. Even if they aren"t repairable and are parts machines only all it takes is to find someone that wants them for what they are and not for scrap. Before you do anything else them try posting them on the Historic Construction Equipment Association site. There are alot of guys on there that use, collect, and play with the older construction equipment. Too there"s a site for Antique Caterpillar Machinery Enthusiasts called ACME where you might also find some interest in some of the machines. If no hits from any of these places then try the parts places. One fairely close to me I"ve dealt with over the years is Construction Equipment parts on Goldston, NC. For the Linkbelt try Seattle Tractor Parts on Washington state. These guys out there are a good bunch to work with too and are always fair on their prices when buying used equipment to part out. That said from the guys at the parts yards you still won"t get much, if any, more than scrap value for the machines but at least they wouldn"t be melted down taking lots of good parts out of circulation..... The main thing is please don"t scrap any of this old stuff unless you have absolutely no choice.

There is a community of folks who read this site affectionately called Yesterdays Tractors because we like seeing, discussing and owning and fixing old equipment. For some twisted reason we collectively see the value of old iron and garner enjoyment from the pastime.

Speaking for myself, by coming on here and telling us that you are going to sell an entire equipment collection to an ironmonger for scrap price is personally heartrending and “just plain wrong”. Many of us here would give our eyeteeth to have your embarrassment of riches. Would you go onto a horse lover’s web site and announce that the guy from the glue factory had offered you pennies a pound for a bunch of cow ponies you just inherited?
I don’t know you, your location or the circumstances surrounding your inheriting the machines your grandfather left you. I can tell you that there are many things in society today that have been grossly devalued by the “Wal-Mart”, consumer mentality.
If you really think that showing the stuff to a “million tire kickers” would waste your precious time, I’d ask you to consider what you might learn and the thousands of new friends you might make in the process. What’s that worth?

try the ACMOC site also----you should always specify your location also has transport costs are substantial. you could even try Craigs List or e-bay at something higher than $150/ton.

Several weeks ago I got $937.50/ton for a leaky, 60's Cat crawler. Was not sold by weight. Had 2 guys wanting it at my asking price, no need to discount. It's on a boat, headed south. All it took from me was a craigslist ad.

If you're in a hurry, others will profit. Your choice. Where's that Linkbelt?

They belong to you and you can melt them down for pennies on the dollar if you wish.
However, since you asked, it would be a huge mistake for several reasons.
Even if you have no passion at all for these old machines, you are being raped on the value if they give you the best scrap prices. These will bring you some good money if you just take a little time.
A "stuck clutch" is not the end of the world. You need to know what is really wrong with it. It could just need a little TLC?
These things in parts are worth bunches of money. Chances are someone is telling you "scrap" but they are actually going to part them out and make 100+ times what they paid.

A d2 in good shape with just a stuck clutch? That's a $1500-3500.00 hunk of collectible tractor there. The D8 with good tracks? Start around $6K or more.

You'll kick yourself later if you scrap it all. Plus you;'ll be melting a lot of history. Wouldn't you rather have your GRANDFATHERS stuff live on? I'd love to know the whole history of my D4 or my JD40C. You have a yard full of history and family lore. Don't sell it cheap.

Thanks very much for the responses. I think that I will have to deny this guys offer. I don't have the time to fix these machines myself, I wish I did though. The linkbelt is a dragline crane, we had it started and it ran great a couple of years ago. I have more machines that I am saving; 2 d4 dozers (one he bought new), a 1924 Cat 2 ton, 2 cat roadgraders, another D8 14a with ripper (runs really good) , a cat no. 40 pull scraper, a cat D4 traxcavator, and other stuff too. I am in southeast MN. I think I will try some of these other links posted too. If any of you are interested in any of the machines that I am selling please let me know. Thanks so much for helping me.
