Old gas, lesson learned

Had about five gallons of old gasoline I removed from a pontoon boat fuel tank. I tried to think of ways to get rid of the oil/gas mixture and finally decided to pour it in the gas tank of the 2N along with five gallons of fresh gas. Problem solved, right? Not hardly. Since then I have rebuilt the carb, cleaned the plugs twice, replaced them once, cleaned the sediment bowl twice, cleaned the screen once, replaced the starter and the ignition switch. Not to say some of these things didn’t need to be done anyway, but it sure took away from my seat time. Good thing is now it starts quick and runs great. Moral of this story: don’t put anything in the gas tank of your 1946 2N Ford tractor that you wouldn’t put in your wife’s 2010 Ford Fusion.

Not sure how it affected your ignitions switch and starter but old gas (and it don't have to be too darn old anymore) is a problem. I had a half can of gas I dumped into a 1944 2N about a month back. Tractor was a strong runner but when I started it, well...it was the strangest thing. It ran VERY quiet and would not throttle up. Not like an idle, just the same engine on half volume. Could not figure it out until I realized that gas came out of a 1957 Cub that I had just hauled home and was several months or more old. Drained it, changed it, and tractor ran fine again.

Not too much off topic ,but I use a product called Sta-Bil marine formula when I'm not going to use the tractor for a while. It is suposed to keep gasahol from degrading.---lha

I presume you're talking about a Cub tractor, but the first thought through my mind was a Piper Cub. :P

I also use StaBil in all my gas cans when I fill them. I never have bad gas, and my chain saw and weed eater will always start right up. I keep my cans full all the time, so I do keep gas in them for long periods without a problem. I also use it in my diesel cans. It's good stuff, get it at WalMart of Tractor Supply.
