How does an old thread show up as new. On tool talk the string trimmer thread is dated 9/17/24 yet says new. All the responses are from 2024 until the last 5 on page 2. Ol horses arse responded this am then several after including my two.

Old threads are not locked to prevent replies on the site. When someone makes a reply to an old thread it moves to the top of the list, just the same as a reply to a current thread moves that current thread to the top. This has been the case since the software was changed at the end of 2023 (The old Modern view did the same).

On the right side of the page find “filters”
Click on it and in the bottom left of the box that opens you will see “sort by”
Open this and it will be on “last message”
Change it to “first message” and click on “filter”
The filter will now arrange the threads by the date of the first message in the thread rather than the last message in the thread.

Problem is you have to do this every time you visit the site.
Some of us asked the administrator if he could lock this feature like it was with this new format before the update was done. Chris had set it up originally when we changed over to this new software.
As far as I know we never got a reply.
Don’t know if this type of thing is above the present administration head or just not worth his time.

IMHO if after a set # of months threads were """closed to future replies but left open to read""" would solve that problem. I see no value in someone having ability to reply to a thread 5, 10 ore more yrs old when the possibility the person being replied to is no longer a member of this forum.

I have gained useful information from some of those late replies when searching for information
Just because the OP is not around anymore doesn't mean that nobody else will benefit from all available information

After all isn't this supposed to be a help fourm?

The other thing that bugs me is replying to someone's post used to show up directly after the post you are replying to, now it shows up at the end. Rant is over I'm all better now.

Just quote the post you are replying to, no confusion that way! And all you need to do it mash the "Reply" button in the bottom right of the post you are responding too.

Easy Day (y)

What he said. That's what I did here. Just hit that "Reply" button, then type your comment below the original post.

I think a lot of people come on to the forum from a search engine when they are researching something, and reply to an old post that showed up in their search, not knowing how it effects the cascade of information on this forum. It does resurrect a few posts that I've been unaware of and found interesting, but there are a few........enough said. steve

That's exactly right, since it's often (but not always) a new member who's resurrecting very specific old threads. They google something they're looking for on whatever specific equipment/item, and the thread result pops up. They join up and start replying, oblivious of the date, and then we start a new thread about some old thread being resurrected. Rinse, repeat, whatchagonnado...
