old tractors need help fixing

Im kinda frustrated with my old tractors. Really hate that liking them so much is balanced with the thought that everyone that could work on these has died out. Im getting to old to crawl around on them and learn the technology to repair. So I was thinking if we all work together, mbe can put together a list of possible mech. from every state. What do ya'll think? 0 yeah. I have 2 naa ford and one 9n. I'm alabama.

I don't think very highly of it myself. I've had people ask me to do things that I flat out don't have time to do and have told them so, then I'm the bad guy just for being home minding my own business and being busy. How did somebody else's problems become my responsibility. No thanks, leave me out of it.

There is a neighborhood mechanic left in my area. Used to be 2, but the one older than me hung it up a few years ago. The remains team farm and wrench, not sure they want global advertisement as they are pretty busy as it is, but can share with anyone in the area that doesn’t know them.

Rr Lund can be a bit grumpy, but I understand and agree with his view on this. If you are asking for us individuals to become live mechanic for a day, that probably doesn’t work out so good.

I know of 3 in the county and I’m sure there are more. One used to visit here.
I know not to bug them unless I really need their time because with what they do they don’t have much of it already.
These guys used to work at shops. There’s a reason they’re on their own now and as busy as they want to be.

I don’t have any papers that say I know how to work on stuff, but I do. Take care of stuff that I can and what I can’t goes to my mechanic. Not afraid to work on someone else’s equipment but hesitant to do so because of liabilities. Old tractors are not so much of a problem but then you run into parts availability and possibly transportation issues. Problem now is is my “can do” can’t keep up with my “want to do”🤷‍♂️

We've got an old-fashioned tractor repair shop in town. The guy that opened it sold out,, but the buyer "ghosted" him, as the saying is these days, and he went back to work. His father used to hang out with him and help. I haven't visited in some time, so I don't know the situation now. But whoever is running the shop is busy. They also do some sales on the side.

One friend, with about a dozen old tractors that he uses for haying, and other general uses around the farm, keeps me about as busy as I want to be. It doesn't help, when he thinks I can fix anything made. Not sure where he got that information???

North Alabama guy here. Been wrenching a little over 50 years on farm equipment. Started on the family farm and then at a couple of dealerships along the way. Now after living for seven decades i pick the jobs i want to do here at my home shop. Mostly keeping the hay guys around me going. Farming has changed so much over the years. I used to do large tractor work but, now i stick to the smaller stuff. Use to make service calls but, now only work here at my shop. Stay close to my tool box and the coffee pot! Stay busy as i want. Partial to Ford and old Farmall stuff.

I may be grumpy like Lund but I used to work on all the neighbors broken stuff, one neighbor in particular. In the last couple years I don't anymore. I just got tires of fixing stuff over and over that shouldn't hae been broken. I like to help people but some take advantage of it. I have kind of gotten to where I say "That looks like a problem, but not my problem"

What are you willing to pay per hour for work in mechanic's shop? What are you willing to pay if mechanic comes to you? Are you willing to pay same rate for diagnosis and estimate in cases where you choose not to repair?

The idea of such a list has been kicked around several times, last was earlier this year, I think. You are seeing some of the same con reasons that are common. The good ones with shops generally have all the work they want. The guys doing it on the side don’t want to advertise, they pick and chose the jobs they want. Most people are looking for a “deal” and don’t want to pay shop rates. The list goes on.

If you find someone like Grandpa Love who is willing to do such, you should be talking to him.

A friend of mine has that problem. His mechanic retired and now he is kinda lost. I help him as I can but I'm not a real mechanic. Most people don't want to pay a service charge to have someone come out and look at it and they don't have their own trailer. And most dealerships don't want to be bothered with the old stuff. Young mechanics don't care to do anything after their day job is done. At $200 +- an hour it wouldn't take long for my stuff to be worth nothing. Learn to do as much as you can yourself. Gotta love the old stuff or why would you have!

Why haven't we met up somewhere? Or maybe we have?

I have to say if you are worried about the cost, well, remember, these old tractors really are not worth the money spent on them, except maybe to you. Finding someone can be a challenge, which is why most work on them themselves and come here for advice. Some people would just as soon work on them as operate them. I'm the opposite. I fixed trucks all my life and would rather operate something than fix it. And as I have aged, I send some repairs out because I don't want to do it myself. Mark.
