oliver 1550

I'm looking at an Oliver 1550 diesel with loader. However, after checking various sources, I didn't find that many 232 cu in diesels .. Lots of gas jobs but not many diesels still running. Can you get parts like injectors, rebuild kits, etc for these 1550 diesels? The owner told me he just replaced the clutch, so I guess you can still get clutches and throwout bearings, etc... Are they a reasonably decent tractor.?? Most people I talked to suggest that these old olivers with loaders eat dry clutches... but I'm looking to use only as a back up loader/chore tractor. Thanks

To answer your questions. Injectors: The injectors will interchange with any Oliver diesel with a Lanova combustion chamber. Tips are easy to find. The injectors have been manufactured by American Bosch, CAV and Robert Bosch in that order. Sleeves and pistons. The 232 is a 6 cylinder version of the the 155 cubic inch engine used in the 550 & 660 tractors so yes they are available as well.

We've had several different Olivers for loader tractors and have never had one "eat" a clutch. I think a 1550 diesel would be an excellent loader tractor. Look at it this way: A 77 evolved into the Super 77 which evolved to a 770 which evolved into the 1550. Over the couse of 20 years Oliver refined and improved the 185 series waukesha as well as the rest of the drivetrain so by the time they released the 1550 it had 20 years of development and engineering to make a good tractor.

The tractor is located near Cooperstown New York. I see from the other posts some engine parts can be obtained and I presume clutch parts..but for how long is the burning question in my mind. What "parts" are you talking about that are not available???... But I guess I can answer my own question... as AGCO is the acquirer of the Oliver/White product line. ..and Its increasingly difficult to get parts for my AC tractors. I think I'll take a pass on the 1550.

I have a 1550 Oliver with a loader on it. It is my everyday tractor and I get all of the parts I need when I need them.

Melbron was pullin' your leg a little, which is common on these forums. "Nope, that's a terrible tractor. Never can find parts. BTW, do you have a phone number for the seller?" [so I can call and buy it, after I've scared you off].

I had a 1550 for about 20 years, as my main tractor (small operation). I loved it, wish I'd never sold it. Never had a problem with parts. Clutches, for example- had to replace mine once. Took it to a commercial clutch/brake outfit, they rebuilt disc and pressure plate- never even asked me what it was out of.

For a straight utility/ loader tractor, I'd probably go with something a little smaller and more nimble. But if you're doing some tillage and hay, its a very good compromise.

Thanks for the feedback. I have an AC 175d with bush hog 2426 loader. Well balanced unit.. not bulky and gets around the barns and feed lots very easily, and i especially like the wet clutch I was somewhat worried that the 1550 might be a little more "bulky" than my 175. Yes, I'm just looking for a loader tractor to assist with cleaning up and moving big round bales of hay/baleage... Maybe the 5500 JD is more closer to my requirements.
