Oliver 1950 GM Fluids

Recently purchased a 1950 GM with MFWD. I would like to change fluids, but don"t have an owners manual yet. What type of oil is used in the hydra power? What is best to use in the hubs on the MFWD, I assume 90weight, but is there somthing better? Last but not least, I have been told many times to use only straight 40 weight non detergent in the engine. I have a good local distributer for mobil oil products, is anyone using mobil in their detroit? Thanks for the help. Bill

Hydra-power you can use ATF or good quality hydraulic oil such as hy-gard, hi-tran etc..
Also, yes make sure to use a straight weight oil in the engine. I know some guys that use Mobil oil, just make sure it is straight 30 or 40 weight. I run straight 30 weight that I get from our local JD dealer because they are close. Hubs run 80w90 as well as the trans./final drive. Use regular hydraulic oil in the hyd resevoir right under the seat.

Years ago I always used Mobil Delvac in my tracks that had Detroits in them. Worked real well.

My Detroit Diesel manual recommends the use of 30, 40, or 15W 40 engine oil. 15W 40 will aid starting in cold weather, but will slobber more oil at idle speeds. But, then Detroits are made to be run wide open. I run 30 weight in my Detroits year round, but we generally have mild winters.
