My 550 is hard to start and VERY sluggish. Bumping the throttle up doesnt help anything, and the last time i ran it it ended up dying. Any idea what the cause may be?

Let us know which engine, gas or diesel, and if diesel, which injection pump. Other details, like Serial # and how often it’s run and machine history will help diagnose.
I have an early diesel and I had similar symptoms, finding out that my timing was off when I bought it. Advancing the timing to proper setting got my quick throttle response back and she runs strong. Adjusted the valves back to spec at the same time as well.
If it’s a gasser I’d be checking the air intake pipe for good air flow by removing the pipe at the carb and running. Then check fuel flow out of the carb, spark plug condition, and whether or not you are getting adequate spark. Might run through the carb adjustment process while at it for good measure but there may be other trouble shooting steps before

Its a 1958 gasser. Ive run it a few times recently, but its not every day.

Check your air cleaner.
