Oliver 77 Engine Removal

I have an Oliver 77 Row Crop that I need to remove the engine in order to do some transmission repair. What is the best way to attach the engine to the hoist? Thanks in advance.

What kind of transmission repair? I can not think of any transmission work on a 77 where I would pull the engine to do it. I think you are making extra work for yourself.

I need to replace a broken shifter rail which requires removal of the shifter rail cover which requires removal of the belt drive which requires removal of the engine.

You can take the belt pulley drive off without removing the engine. We used to go out and put clutches in 77 & 88 tractors without removing the engines in farmers barns and corncribs.

I went to my local fastenal and got a drilled and tapped lifting eye with thread disegnation of 1/2-13 and screwed it onto the lifting head bolt located about in the middle of the head. After removing the 4 engine to frame bolts and other stuff I just lifted it out.

Thank you for your reply.
Am I correct in my understanding that by "lifting head bolt" you are referring to the threaded head studs that extend above the head about 2 inches?
If so, they are located on the left side of the head and would seem to cause the engine weight to be unevenly distributed thus causing the engine to rotate when it is lifted. Am I missing something?
Thanks again.

On my motor there is only the one located about in the center of the head. See my tractor has a belt pulley so after I lifted mine up I had to slide it forward a little bit and then it came on out. There is a spot on the left side (when setting on tractor) down close to the frame/motor bolt where you could probably attach the other kind of lifting eye in order to raise the front and keep it from rotating. Please only take this as what I have done or could have done and by no means is it the exact way to do it and I am not responsible for any injuries that might accur. Not that I suffered any injuries but thought I would say this like the guys on the tractor engine overhaul videos.

Thanks for the follow up. After looking at my engine again I see what you are saying. Great tip on Fastenal. Store was less than 3 mi. from me and I didn't even know it existed! Very interesting store. Thanks again.
