Oliver 770 (Military)

I don"t know much about Olivers so hopefully someone can help me with some information. I was looking at an Oliver 770 that was sold to the U.S. Air Force via U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Does anyone know how many of these were actually made in that year or in total. The year it was made was 1959.

Also, are engine parts for the 770 hard to find and/are they reasonably priced?

Thanks all and Merry Christmas.

I am going to muddy the water a little bit. Engine wise the 770 is a basic 185 Waukesha engine. Waukesha also made a 185 military engine. There was a man that used to show a 77 Oliver at a show near here and his mechanic told me a lot of the internal parts were different because he wanted to overhaul it and parts didn't fit. So check it out very close. I know when I was at Ft Belvoir in 63 some of the 770 tractors were in Korea.

Here in the UK we had US Air Force bases for many yeary after WW2. They used Oliver 88 tractors with large magnets under them to collect metal objects from the runways. They eventuley got sold off to the scrap man and a few of the tractors survived into preservation minus the magnets. MJ

Very interesting to know that about the engines. Where do you start looking for 185 Waukesha engine parts?

Probably would need rings and gaskets to start with for a stuck engine. I really only know about Minneapolis Molines.

Twenty-two year military veteran here so the military tractors have particular interest for me.

I have a MM that once had a magnet on it that MJ talked about. Might be interesting to have on a tractor but the weight on those things were HUGE!

I have a super 77 military with the 185 engine, it has a plate on the valve cover stating that it is a military, it also has a plate on mounted on the engine showing bore and stroke that are different from oliver. I believe that they used some engine parts that would exchange with other military engines. so parts could be hard to find. you could put a 77 or 770 engine in it if your not concerned about an accurate restoration.

Well 99% of your gaskets are going to be the same as for a 770. Rings> Measure them up and look in a piston ring catalog. They have a 4.375 bore instead of 4.500 like a 770.

770 engine parts are faily easy to get parts. KOrves oliver or any salvage yard. also you have a fairly hard to find tractor. there are painted the army green of the time and have there military serial on them instead of the 770 decal. you should do some research in this tractor.also if you want to restore it to its military look you may need a custom decal shop to do it.

Is this a army green one or industrial yellow? Also is it an actual industrial with the big front hubs or is it a row crop? Just curious
