how would an oliver 88 diesel be as a pulling tractor?

They are a dog compared to a gas unless you want something cheap on fuel. You can't get enough air through the head.

my brother has one that pulls 9500 in 3rd gear and wins a lot, but has a lot of head work and more. Chuck

Good for stock class. Turn the fuel up and put her in low gear!!! I pulled one for years

If you have done dyno time with an 88 dsl. like we have then you already know that when the American Bosch pump trips into full fuel and the engine starts rolling coal you just lost 5 to 7hp, they will make some torque but an 88 gas with M&W pistons will make more power, a dsl. can be made to run ok but it takes some money, my DC Case with M&W domes had no problem out pulling stock 88's with the fuel turned up, the engine needs more air and the stock head doesn't provide enough

Wrong pump put a roosamaster on it and will help .

If you can find one of the original Super 88 diesel heads they flow better, larger valves. I had one but it got stole.

put bigger intake valves in it and port out head a bunch put a 1650 diesel manifold on it with a electric fuel pump set at 20psi cut and reweld rocker arm to get more lift and cut some weight off governor weights it will outrun any gas of same size advance timing 2 degreees also

Theres a guy in our club that runs a 770 diesel. As far as power is concerned it does pretty well. We run "stock" classes though.
The thing rolls coal pretty hard when the transfer sled starts putting a good load on it. Looks cool. Probably would pull better if he cleaned that up a bit.

I used the gear drive supply pump from an HD-11 Allis and set it at 30 psi. Mine was turboed. You are correct there is no way the stock setup can supply enough fuel- it just barely kept up at stock settings.

It might pull a little better but I think first place in 5000,5500 classes and 2nd place overall points for the season isn't bad. maybe if I had a oliver with super low gear it would be better :roll:

I have a 1956 Super 88 diesel WF and pulled her a couple of times --did not place but had fun should have used low gear instead of 2nd I guess . She weighs 5000 all stock and I really do not want to alter her . Her oil pressure reads on the low side although she runs perfect -- not sure what to believe . -- love the sound of that waukashaw diesel .

I wouldnt gear that tractor down. I can sense the sarcasm, but my tractor is only able to compete because of the lower gear. Otherwise, 26 hp wouldnt cut it.
EDIT: I mentioned cleaning it up would make it pull better. It would. Rolling coal looks cool but its really unburnt diesel. I'm sure there isnt a realistic way to clean it up without adding a turbo.

e could turn the fuel down a little to clean it up and make more power. to much fuel just puts the fire out. Chuck
