i have a wheelhorse d-160 lawnmower with an onan engine. i am having considerable trouble finding engine parts for it. i will need a gasket set for it and a piston. it is a 16hp horizontally opposed engine. thanks don

Onan parts for garden tractor engines are getting very hard to find since Onan dropped the garden tractor engine line. Good luck.

Sorry but that's just one more of those urban myths that keeps on getting perpetuated by people on forums who don't have first-hand information.

There is no shortage of Onan parts and there are plenty of places to find them. For instance, any John Deere dealer is a source because Deere used Onan's in quite a few garden tractors. So did Gravely, Sears, Cub Cadet and others. And every RV dealer out there has to service gensets with Onan engines in them.

Onanparts.com is just one of many on-line places on the internet. Before you post erroneous info, you should try Googling Onan engines and see how many hits show up.

Tom, this came from 3 different dealers when I tried to get my 448 Ingersoll repaired. I assume they know more about it than I do considering two of them were old Case/Ingersoll dealers and I did check the Onan site and was told by Customer Service they no longer manufactured garden tractor engines anymore. Course I was also told by someone on this board that John Deere manfactured their cheap line of tractors!

The stringent emissions standards adopted by California force Onan to cease production of engines for the outdoor power equipment companies. However, parts are not a problem to find or obtain.

I just typed "Onan Parts" into Google and came up with 639,000 hits.

And the above are just a sampling. I don't doubt what you were TOLD but with all due respect, there are a lot of people in dealerships today that can't figure out how to wipe their butt without a GPS and an instruction video. And this is especially true with Case/Ingersoll dealers.

Sorry if I came across a bit harsh but I see myths like this show up on this forum and others all the time. Go to e-Bay and you'll find Onan parts for sale there all the time. Anyone claiming to having a hard time finding Onan parts simply isn't looking. And the easiest place to look is on the net.

Have any of you guys ever actually trotted over to your nearest Cummins Diesel distributor and checked on what (if anything) is still available through them? (Yeah, I know lots of $$$$, but what can they actually supply?)

I traded my 448 off for two reasons- lack of dealers and the ones who were left didn't seem too willing to work with you anymore.

That's really a shame. Had you gone searching for some of the forums that are dedicated to the Colt, Case and Ingersoll brands, you would have found all the help you needed on all fronts.

Most of the Cummins dealers today. Are not going to know what you are talking about. They will have little if any parts for the old Onan engines.

Some Onan parts are getting hard to find. From the normal source.

No RV dealers do not have to service an Onan engine if they choose not to. The genset engine and the Power unit engines. Do share a lot of the same parts. But there are items. That are not the same.

Tom is very correct on one thing. Most dealer parts people couldn't find the part if you showed it to them. I have had some that couldn't find the part. Even with the part number.

Some are not going to spend the time to even look.

Been working with Onan units since 1980

The best place I have found is Sears. Yes I said Sears. I have a Sears SS16 and a GT18. Plus a Case 446. I am currently rebuilding a a John Deere 316 for a friend and have been ordering a lot of my parts from Sears. Good prices and shipping is great too.

I work for a Toro dealer. To my knowledge we have had no trouble getting the Onan parts we have tried to get. Their prices are about in line with Kawasaki and Kohler.
The nice thing about Toro is that the parts drawings for the engine are usually included with the mower parts drawings.
