Onan Engine

I just bought a Craftsman riding mower with a 20 hp Onan engine with electronic ignition. It has no spark. I would like to know how to check out the coil and the pickup for the ignition. I believe it to be a good engine. It has 110 psi on each cylinder compression. The sears model no. is 917.254430 if that means any thing. Thanks for any help.

Had the pickup go out in my Wheel Horse -onan. The parts guy told me to pull both spark plugs take a VOM (Volt Ohm Meter)and measure ohms on the pick up while spinning over the engine, if it's working it'll jump up and down like a switch is opening and closing. Coil- same VOM and check resistance through the primary side and for continuity between primary and secondary circuits.

If eng a P series(P220)first thing to do is check that you have +12v at pos(+)terminal of coil with the ign sw in on/run position,if not then problem in ign sw,safety sw's or wiring harness on tractor. If this proves to be the problem, take a jumper wire from battery pos(+) directly to coil pos(+)terminal, crank eng & check for spark or see if eng fires/runs.

If still no spark,if eng has an oil pressure sw/low oil cutoff disconnect sw & check for spark again. If still no spark with sw disconnected, then problem in ign system.Check trigger module/coil as wisbaker said, unless you have manual for eng you you can only confirm with an ohmmeter/12v test lite that trigger module working & that primary/secondary of coil not open, unless you have a resistance value for primary/secondary of coil to compare against you don't know quality of coil & if wire turns of primary/secondary shorted.

What you might try is do a google search for onan+mod#+manual, over the yrs I have been able to download(free) service/repair manuals for different series eng at several websites.

NOTE-The above instructions are ONLY for the P series eng,if any other series/p series I would recommend locating a service/repair manual for eng if problem ON eng in ign system,be sure of what you need for parts as when/where you locate/buy you'll find out any onan part is EXTREMELY expensive & elect parts are usually not returnable.

Jerry..sounds like you are a good person to ask..

I have an old Bolens QT 16 that I replaced the original Onan with a "Big-Bore" Onan short block..

I seem to be having a problem with the carb Float not letting gas into the float bowl..
Seems to happen most when going up a slight grade or just trying to move forward..
I just put a New Needle & Seat in it and also put a low pressure electric fuel pump on it, with no improvement..
Have any ideas..??
Thanks..!
Ron..
