I noticed a crack in the end of one of my lift arms. I am going to replace it as soon as I get my next paycheck. Question is, should I bite the bullet and replace them both? I am usually one of those "If it ain't broke don't fix it" kind of guys, but I really don't want to have an implement fall on me because I was to cheap to replace a part.

What do you guys think?

If the other arm isn't worn or damaged badly or looking like it may crack, my opinion would be to just leave it be and repalce the broken one.

If it's going to keep you awake at night worrying, then it's probably worth just doing them both.

As far as the implement falling on you (ouch) I hope that you would not be working on the implement without it being proper blocked or lowered to the ground.

Ihave welded them with great results, even the right upper lift arm(STILL GOING AFTER 5 YEARS you can try that good luck lha

They were welded on at the factory, no reason not to weld it now. One problem buying just one new one, It likely be longer than the other especially if it is original. The re-pops are a universal length to suit later models too as well as the category one specs that originated about 1971.

I too have welded my right upper lift arm '49 8N.

Unless it was a disaster case.. I'd weld it up.

clean the metal with a wire wheel, v-cut the crack.. get some 1/8 rod... say 6011, and buz in a root and tie passes, cleaning slag as you go, then top dress it with some 6013.. perhaps grind to fit contour.. prime, paint and go.

Might want to stick a rod thru the yokes to make sure she don't warp.

weld is good. if you're not comfortable with your welding, have someone else do it for you. i bought two new ones few years back, they both twisted, and they were thicker then the originals. i took them back and had the old ones welded.

i would not waste time with an aftermarket one, the bend and twist under light work. do what ever to save the original.
