original paint

Just wondering, on any of the original paint two cylinders, specifically 50 , 60, 70, 80 series that you have. Do any of them have a small amount of paint on the serial number tag. These tractors look to be original paint but do have some paint on the tag. I'm guessing that the factory was no too careful with masking off the tag.

If there's paint on the tag it's a repaint. If someone did a good professional job years ago
some could almost pass for original.

the serial numbers of ALL john deere 2 cylinders to my knowledge were put on AFTER they were painted.
would like to hear others comment on this. thanks

Don't do much with 2CYL but have looked at many original New Gens that have been painted that owner thought had not.Serial #s are one of the last things after factory paint is applied.I see several that small decals have been painted over, rear axles have paint and the front hubs green on originals is a real giveaway plus tachs that appear better than rest of gauges or wrong tach.If you cant tell have an experienced person look too.

The pictures I have seen of original factory assembly lines in the two-cylinder era show the serial number tag was put on the main case FIRST. All other parts were then added to it to make the complete tractor. Odds are some were masked better than others. Mike

The first give away to a tractor that has been painted is the tag! There should be no paint on the serial tags if its original! This was one of the last things to be put on them after it was painted! A paint job 50 years back now could look original but now its not! Look close at the tractor! This H is ORIGINAL NEVER PAINTED! Post a picture that may help to look at it! Chris
