ot 84 ford pickup ?

What my question is my 84 ford pickup 6 cylinder 300 motor quits while driving down the road. It quits just like the switch is shut off. It did this yesterday and this morning i went out to start it and fired up almost insantly which it normally does. I have put new plug wires coil wire new dist.cap and rotor in it sometime back. What i think is my problem is the control assembly on the dist. as there are two old ones in the glove box and this one was installed in 1998. What do you guy,s think it could be? I have ruled out fuel problem or could it be possible the float somehow shuts off the gas? It doesn,t have the electric shut off like the newer ones do. Thank you for your help Debert.

I know in the 70's they used a control module that would do what you are talking about. It is a square silver box that is on the fender well or on the fire wall. It will have a bundle of wires in it and will have a big plug on it.

I would swith that box, make sure you take the old one along there are different colored tabs on them and they used a few different ones in the same year. I have heard when they quite they will work again when they cool off, but my experience is when they go they are done, take care.

I"m not sure when they started using them, but my 85 has an EFI module on the side of the distributor. It"s about the size of a credit card and about 1/4" thick. It takes a small allen wrench to take it off and has a couple of wires to unplug.

That was a Thick Film Ignition Module (TFI) that was mounted on the side of the distributor. Seven engineering studies indicated that was the wrong place to put it but company territorial politics won out and it was put on the distributor. Usually when they go bad there is no recovery.

Those modules are different...they changed in like 81 or so. I would be tempted to check for a relay switch inside the cab.like just in front of floor shift under dash..... should be square box.....sometimes they get fried by dust/moisture/anything else.

I'm running my dads old 84 f150 with the 300 six.The (TFI) module has been replaced 3 or 4 times since dad bought it new.Like Vern-MI said below, when they usually go...they go.

However, the last one did act up a few times before I replaced it.Be sure to use the silicone dielectric(sp ?) compound on it if you replace it.Napa sould have the socket to remove.

Also, one time the truck was quiting for no reason driving down the road,or just not starting at times.Turned out the "whole" fuse box by the E-brake was loose making a bad connection. Can't remember if theres a screw through the the box to keep the connection tight,or a bolt through the firewall(from under the hood) to the back of the box.

Otherwise the fuel might be boiling out of the line going over the top of the valve cover. My 85 did that last year so i re routed it around the back of the block to the firewall then to the carb. Good Luck!

Replace your coil wire again! My old neighbor had an '84 that was doing the same thing. Left him stranded one day and I was the only one that he could get a hold of. I got to where he was parked and was looking over everything, he got inside and hit the starter, I could here a "snapping" sound and was able to pin point it. The coil wire was resting against a bracket and had wore through causing it to ground. All I did was turn the wire away from this bracket and the truck fired right up. He went to the parts store and got a new wire. When he got home he took a piece of heater hose, split it long ways, and put it over the wire where it might rub that bracket... No more problems!

The first "Six" things I would recommend is that you determine if it is an ignition or fuel problem. Recently I had an intermittent problem that fooled me for too long because ignition is what the problem seemed to be. Carry a spare spark plug that you can clamp to ground, connect to a plug wire and watch for spark while engine is cranked, the next time it fails. You could use a can of starting fluid to help you with your diagnosis.

My '83 did the same thing a few years ago. Sam,e symtoms- hit the key and it would fire back up. Turned out it was a small grey box, about 1"x1"x2" (probably a relay of some type?) near the battery. Cheap fix, elimiated teh problem.

Had a E-150 that would do that, and sure enough it was the ignition switch. Hit a little bump and it would just die. Took a while to figure that one out.

Ain't it funny? The guy asks us for advice,we ask him questions or give tips and he never replies back.
