OT again - Southern accents

One of the replys to the "Southern Staets" posts below got me thinking. My brother has 6 kids, 3 born in FL and 3 in TX. The ones who lived in Florida never seemed to have a Southern accent at all, but after they moved to TX fora few years all 3 of them and the 3 new ones all had a drawl.

Now I have relatives in NC who have a drawl as well and know others from states between NC & TX who do as well.

Is it just me, or does FL somehow not produce a drawl with their regional dialect?

When I moved "South" from MN/ND to IA 15 years ago to go to vet school it took about 5 years before people stopped telling me I talked like a "Minnesotan". By the way, the IA climate was so much better than "up north" that I stayed put after finishing school! Nice to live in the South - relatively speaking.

Thanks for the link. Never thought of that as I was just kind of continuing the thread below without "hijacking" the topic from the origianl poster. Interesting site, I may visit there more often.

People are surprised when I tell them I was born and raised in FL because I have no southern accent. That's because FL for the most part wasn't populated appreciably until the 30's/40's/50's by northerners. The northesters (PA/NY/MA) populated the east coast (US1/I95), and the midwest (Ohio/Mich/Ill) populated the west coast (301/I-75).

For one thing, people in Texas do not have a southern accent. The people from the southeast have a very differant accent. The differance is easy to detect to me.
I don't think we have an accent anyway, everyone else does.
