OT Allis tidbit!!!

Just read a little piece of Allis news. They were first to have rubber ties we know. BUT they also were the first to put fluid in the rear tires for weight that wouldn't freeze.

Yes, and the fluid was CaCl.........the cheap fluid so despised by so many board members, thinking it will rot a rim in a few minutes, rather than by months/years of neglect. Back in the day, real farmers bought what gave them the most bang for the buck...ie, most weight per dollar. It was what they could afford.

Allis also invented the spin out wheel (PA rims). the list of firsts is a long one, books by Norm Swinford, C.H. Wendel are good reads, if you are interested.

CaCi was used in our old WD-45 and served it's purpose, added weight to a somewhat light tractor. it survived many cold winters and never took it's toll on the rims. But any small leak and ... you never know. The spin out rims were also neat as well as the hand clutch, hence live PTO hydraulics, etc. Maybe could have had a better seat, but it still was a cheap priced tractor in it's day.
