OT Any Smokers?

I have been smoking cigs for 40 years.

Many (25+) years ago I quit twice for 2 months each time, and started back both times.

I just went cold turkey for 24 hours.

Not one smoke.

Supper, breakfast, lunch, all day, whiskey, beer.

No smoke...

I AM having one now.

I SAID I AM HAVING ONE NOW!!!!!!!

CAN YOU HEAR ME!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I MAY FREEKIN HAVE TWO!!!!!

OR MORE!!!

Then we will se if I can regroup.

I proved something to myself.

Wonder what it was.

I can tell a great improvement, in my well being, other than needing a smoke.

They have f**ked us.

If I had 1970s Marlboro Lights to smoke, instead of these freekin off brands, and the alduterated current Marlboro Lights for a riduclous price...

I think things would be different!!!!

They are killing us off, on purpose!!

If we don't bow down and quit it, like they say!!!

Thanks for listening.

I have about burned this one up in my favored left hand while typing this message, only puffing it a couple of times.

And barely inhaling that.

I haven't had a pack in my shirt pocket all day.

I do now.

I need a far in the yard.!!!

Well had the far...

Back in now...

Thought I would share.

And I need opinions from you fellers on this post.

No doubt some of you have BTDT.

My Ole Lady quit cold turkey 3 years ago, and never looked back!!!!

Reckon she is more of a man than I am?

I started smoking when I joined the army at age 19 in 1964. I quit in 1997 when I started weezing at night, scared the hell out of me. I smoked 3 packs a day of straight camels for years and a pipe and chewed. destroyed the gums with he chewing.

I used the patch and it was not easy. The first week was the worst.

No body made me smoke except myself and no body helped me quit but myself.

Good Luck!

Still can not get the wife to quit!

i smoked for 15 years then put them down last year, i still have cravings and have even given in to em, and smoked 1, i guess livin in ky, raising tobacco, and enjoying them when i did smoke.

You can do it Dunk, keep up the good work. You got a lot of support here. you're in my prayers.

45 years of Marlboros. I am completely and hopelessly addicted. I've had all the patches, gum, pills, hypnosis, support classes, and gone cold turkey. Quit a couple times for a week, once for 3 months. Most miserable 3 months of my life. I cough, hack, and wheeze all the time and envy the non-smokers, but still reach for another cigarette. Each time I light up I wonder if this will be the one that trips the tumor that's going to eventually get me. Dad smoked himself to death 10 years ago. I sat by his bed while he was dying and had to run outside every hour or so to have another cigarette. If you CAN quit, quit NOW.

Well I smoked pipe & cigar for a few years & then in 1974 when I turned my life over to the Lord , I quit cold turkey . Put the pipes & Grampas stand in the attic , threw all the cigars & beer away for 24 yrs . Then in late 1999 when the wife started acting strange & left me for amonth & then after 3 months left for good , I started smoking again . It was all due to severe depression .Its sad what 35 yrs being with a woman & having her leave for the younger boys can do to a guy . I keep saying I'll quit but still puffing pipes . I'm so glad God's a forgiving God . God bless

That sounds about like a navy doctor I had many years ago. He told me and he said off the record. If you smoke pot that is good for you and your problem but if you tell any body I said this I will deny it. But I do have a stomach problem and almost never am hungry

I have smoked cigarettes, a pipe and cigars for about 35 years. Had my last cigar on Christmas Eve. I miss it - but the real reason for quiting is just because I am cheap -And my wife had to quit, she had a couple of strokes and the doctor was all over her to quit, so I quit to help her. She used the patches and it helped her. I just have had enough with the way they keep raising the prices. Get angry about it Dunk - get angry and direct the anger twords the cigarettes and convince yoursled you do not want it. God Bless You!!!

Been at it for 45 years - quit many times - gain weight and A1C
goes over 8, so start again. Just switched to those electric ciggys -
nothing but water vapor & nicotine - we'll see. Fight it like H*LL
Dunc - you're in my prayers!

Wife has been off them for over 18 months this
time. She had to have her Gall Bladder removed,
simple day stay surgery, and back home... Oops,
the bladder burst, was pretty nasty, and had to do
a major cleanup. then stayed in hospital for 4
days on antibiotic IV"s. Was home for 4 days,
started to swell real bad, and looked bad. Then
all of a sudden, worse pain than the bladder
attack. Had to call ambulance to take her back.
She was looking REAL bad. Kept her in ER all day
waiting for the surgeon to come by and check on
her, and give orders. He never did... ER Doc got
her in a room with tests, and orders. He had
another surgeon (Gastric) to do a follow up. He
rushed her in for emergency surgery again. The
previous Doc left a stone in the bile duct, and
did not get rid of all the infection. This time
her oxygen level kept dropping everytime they took
her off the oxygen. Would go below 88% saturation
on room air. Should be in the mod 90"s for a
healthy smoker. She had to have respiratory
treatments, and more IV meds to get her stable on
breathing. After about 10 days got to bring her
home. After the third day of Hell at the hospital
this go around, she told me to toss ALL
cigarettes, and ashtrays. Wanted a sign out front
that said NO SMOKING. She just didn"t like being
in the hospital, and also the fear of being hooked
to the oxygen for whatever time she might have
left. She had smoked for about 25 years. She has
done REAL good. She hates the smell of smoke now,
as it makes her nauseated. I chewed for many
years, and as the prices kept going up, I tossed
my last bag of Beechnut away, and never looked
back. Ok, I do miss it at times, but it always
made my wife mad because I have always been able
to stop anything at a moments notice. Did the same
with alcohol, just woke up one morning, realized
what it was doing to my brain, and the fact my
body had serious rejection issues with it, and
quit... Hope the rest of you can get it done if
you want to. Maybe you should stop by, and have
this Jake Leg Surgeon get your Gall Bladder out
:-) Oh, and there were absolutely NO CHARGES for
ANY of the surgeries... Go Figure.

I feel your pain. I smoked for 25 years and chewed for 15 years so I could stop smoking. I stopped chewing last June. I miss it every day but like the money I'm saving. Waistline is growing more though. Good Luck. I think cold turkey is the only sure way to do it.

I'm not bragging but I started smoking when I was 14 years old. Smoked for 48 years. Pall Mall was the brand I smoked when they quit me. Having a heart attack at 42 years old is no fun either. I had been having angina a couple years ago after lighting up so at my next doctors appointment I asked him about the Chantix I'd been seeing on TV. I started taking it while smoking the first week. The cigarettes no longer gave me ANYTHING. Been smoke free for two and a half years now. Cigarettes still smell good but I have no desire to smoke one. The fourty pounds I've gained is another story. Hang in there Dunk and above all think think positive. Hey! who else is going to weed the garden this summer? David...............

I was hopelessly hooked on them for 22 years. Cold turkey Aug 1, 2002. Haven't touched one since. At Canadian prices ($8.00 a pack or more), I'm up about 25 grand. And I feel great!

I smoked between 17 and 21.Mostly cigarettes, some times a pipe. Was working in a TV shop, ran out one day.All I had to do was walk across the yard to the gas station and get a pack from the machine for 30 cents.Said to hell with it,Smoked one pouch of 10 cent tobacco during the next week, bummed a few butts from friends and quit.I have 2 friends running on one lung. One never smoke butts only his pipe, the other smoked 3 packs a day. He has had several heart attacks and a stroke last year left him blind in one eye.A good friend I grew up with had a massive heart attack. He lived a few hundred feet from the Framingham Hospital famous for their work on heart trouble. He was alive when the ambulance got him to the hospital but they couldnt save him.I still remember his wifes frantic phone call at 430 in the morning telling me Whitey had a heart attack, hes dead...My son smokes but he wont smoke around me though.Hes 50 now,Whitey was 55 when he died. How can anyone spend 25 bucks a day smoking. My Doc says one of my lungs has a small area of scarring. He says not to worry. my weak heart is my main problem.

Stole a pack of my Grandmother's B&H menthol when I was 13. My friend and I smoked the whole pack in our tree fort in a couple of hours. It made us both real sick. When I was 15, I watched the doctors carve that same grandmother up and pump her full of chemicals trying to keep her alive. She hemoraged to death right in front of me. We were very close. It was enough to overcome the cultural pressure to smoke. Glad I never really got started.

Dunk.

Twice, I wrote a big, long thing and deleted it. Each time it all comes down to this. If YOU WANT TO quit, you will quit, and NOTHING will stop you.

June 16, 1986 I quit drinking and doing drugs because I WANTED TO. Yep, fell off the wagon, but I kept climbing back on.

Good luck with your decision...don t..whos a 52yo male, 38 yr smoker with a heart condition who does not WANT to quit.

Started sneaking cigs when I was 9. Smoked regular for 22 years, mostly in the military where they were available AND CHEAP. I know your pain. I was up to three packs a day when I finally quit in 1998. Quit a couple of times before but didn't take until:

1. I have an uncle that smoked 3 packs a day for 30 years tell me: "I'm a three pack a day smoker who hasn't smoked for 20 years. Son, I'm like an alcoholic; there is no such thing as I'll just have one."

2. The doctors swear the nicotine is out of your system in 72-96 hours, after that it is all habit and desire.

3. I found that if you take a cinnamon stick ( the real bark in the spice cabinet) you can split it just right and have something left in your hand the basic size and shape as a cig. I chewed and gnawed my way through two jars of the stuff before I could give THAT up, but it gave me something to reach for, hold in my hand and draw on. And my breath smelled nice

Hang in there brother, we got your back

I smoked for 45+ years. I quit several times, once for over a year. I could beat the nicotine habit but any little stress and I needed a smoke. I had two brothers die young of heart problems and a sister die of lung cancer. All were heavy smokers. None of that was enough to make me quit. Four years ago I retired. My health started to go down hill. My blood pressure was going up, diabetes getting worst and I was putting on weight. Test showed I had had a heart attack some time in the past. I have one completely blocked artery and one 90% blocked. My wind was so bad that I had difficulty walking to the mail box and back. I quit cold turkey about a year ago. That may have been the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life. I now walk a mile+ almost every day (treadmill). Heart function is getting better but I still may need one or more stents. Breathing is better, mail box walk is now no problem. I will find out how much better when I work in the garden and cut grass this summer. If you give up and continue smoking the chances of you beating cancer are very slim. Give it up and fight like h@ll. Take the surgery and the chemotherapy and whatever else that is offered. Once you beat it your perspective will change and you will enjoy life. You are going to die some day but try to live as long as possible and enjoy every minute. Once you have health problems and recover or at least improve you entire out look changes and you don't sweat the small stuff any more and enjoy life much more then you ever did in the past.

Dunk you are being had by the cigarettes!!!!!

I am 74 now and quit a three pack a day habit when I was 35. Lucky Strike straighht exhaust!!!!!

It was one of the hardest things I ever did but I am alive today because I did it. My arteries are damaged and will always be damaged from smoking for that 20 years. Wish I had never even seen one much less smoked them for 20 years.

I've had an aortic anurysm, heart attack, bladder cancer, guts taken out and put back in backwards with several surgerys from the anurysm incision. All connected to my 20 years of smoking.

Don't be a fool. Stop smoking. Now!

Zane

Dunk i just started my 4th year the 1st of march without a smoke.I have 3 stints in my heart and even that wouldn't make me stop. Then one day i started thinking how much i loved my grandbabies and wanted to spend as much time with them as possible and that gave me the strength i needed.Smoked for 45 years,3 packs a day on a slow day.Think of all the good reasons to stick around.

If you"re sure you want to quit, see your doc about Chantix. .

It"ll take the edge off the whole process and squash the hard urges, and reduce them to a low roar background wish for a smoke.

Ron, a former 2 pack a day smoker for over 40 years.

I've never smoked, Dunk, but smokers are being mercilessly villified by society for engaging in a legal activity which they enjoy.

My father smoked a pipe nearly all of his life and my mother smoked cigatetts until she passed on 10 months ago at the age of 93.

Last May, my younger brother and I were visiting Mom about a week before she passed when she said she would like to have a cigarette. She had not had one for nearly a month as she had been in the hospital before moving to a nursing home for her final days.

Though smoking was strictly prohibited in the home, my brother, a smoker, and I helped her outside to the patio and allowed her to have her last cigarette.

My mother was a WWII veteran, having served as a nurse in McArthur's Army in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippenes, and she was NOT to be denied her last cigarette.

If the spineless politicians truely believe that smoking is what they seem to think it is, they should make it illegal. Until they do, society should leave smokers alone.

Dean

I smoked ten years and stopped four years ago-- cold turkey. I chewed gum, and thought about it, but each time I tried to quit I would start back up again. I always joked that "mom didn't raise no quitter." Anyhow, what turned out to be the early warning signs of a bad gall bladder caused me to quit, and I have not turned back. I was never a heavy smoker unless I was drinking. Normally about 1/2 pack a day. Also, I stopped drinking for the better part of a year because Joe Camel and BudLight go together so well. Don't worry, I drink again.

If you successfully quit, I suspect you will think about or want one until the day you die. That is just the way it is.

They are indeed spineless. Personally I think they should make the commercial sale of cigarettes (e.g. tobacco) for profit illegal and let individuals do what they want as far as cultivating and using it. While I have no quarrel with "reasonable" limitations on personal use - (i.e. banning smoking in many indoor public places) we are going way beyond what I believe to be reasonable - there is no reason we can't have both smoking and non-smoking bars/restaurants for example. Post the rules at teh door and let the consumer decide

TOH - a never-smoker who grew up in a 6 pack a day home (and I'm not talkin' beer here).

If my syfering was right I pretty much smoked for 37 years. Did quit once for 2 years back in the eighties but dipped snuff as a replacement. Then had 2 habits.
As of September 09 I quit it all & really haven't missed it. Wore the patch for 7 days but my heart kept fluttering so just toughed it out. Much easier than I thought it would be.
You really gotta wanna quit. Besides the obvious reasons 40 something dollars a carton (every week) convinced me.

Btw, I gotta brag on another good feller many of you know that quit about the same time I did, Don Barkley of nnalert's.
He said he started smoking before he could walk good!

Hang in there Dunk, you can do it.

What really sucked was a couple days before I quit I'd just gotten about 7 free cans of snuff from the State Fair for free!

Thanks for every reply!

You guys have a way with helping me deal with all of this.

I have only smoked one so far today.

My Dad's Dad.....

May 29 1892 to Nov 11 1967, told me that he started smoking at the ripe old age of 4 years old, that could have been a tall tale I guess, but his Mom did die when he was very young.

When he died at 75 he had smoked Camel non-filters, all of my life.

His son, my uncle, died at 41 YO from lung cancer.

Dunk,
I once visited Francis Dellafield Cancer Hospital in NYC, many years ago, and saw people dying of lung cancer while they held cigarettes up to the tracheotomy hole in their throat to suck on em' cause they had no lips/mouth left to hold the things. That's what convinced me.

If what you are personally dealing with physically, just now, is not enough to get yer attention, guess you pays yer money and takes yer choices. I quit thirty years ago and haven't touched tobacco since. Strongly recommend that course to you, although I admit it took several years before my right hand stopped fishing for the pack in my shirt pocket after each meal . . .

Good Luck and God Bless You, whatever you deciee.

I quit for 5 yrs. No energy, no drive, of course, I am a risk TAKER. Vidalia Onion Job, 10 million worth, First Time, EXPERIMENTAL! 1994
Need a quick smoke for checking air circulation of fans. TASTED GOOD. No problem making the decision for GO - or - NO GO with the project!

John Do your best!

My Stepson (28) got off of them with Chantix. Nicorette gum and patches wouldn't work for him. My wife quit cold turkey 18+ years ago and hasn't looked back. You CAN do it. Best Regards, JohnC IND.

Dunk, first off let me say I am sorry to hear of your predicament. I was a cigarette smoker for over 20 years. I quit once for a whole year and after catching a whiff of smoke at a party figured hey I'll treat myself to a cigarette. The next morning the first thing I thought of was I need a cig and I went right back to smoking. It was as if I had never quit! These things have something added to them that makes them extremely addictive. 10 years later I finally quit for good. Been smoke free for 14 years.
My advice for what it's worth is to go find a hippie and get some of that wildwood weed. second, make gallons of good coffee and whenever you want a cig, drink a cup of coffee or take a puff of weed. Third, this is a 2 week process, if you smoke as little as one puff of a cigarette you are at the beginning again, as Dell says No Argue!
Good Luck and God bless,
TL

Hang in there- I quit 27 years ago at 24 years old. Still got diagnosed with C.O.P.D. 11 years ago though. Great to quit, best not to start.

1st time poster on the N board...but this one
caught my attention. I smoked for 14 years and
have tried to quit in the past to no success.
Last year I noticed Camel snus...I thought I'd
give it a try and see what it was about. It was
OK. Nice part about it was that you tucked a
small pouch in your upper lip and don't spit. I
did some research on the web and I found Swedish
snus.

Swedish snus (rhymes with moose) is steamed cured
and pasteurized (vs American fire cured). Only
water, flavoring and a tiny amount of salt is
added. In Sweden, they actually removed the
warning labels because all studies showed no
significant increase in harm.

I started using snus and winding back cigs. Did
that for a few months and now have been smoke free
for 11 weeks 4 days. The key part, at least in my
opinion, it has enough nicotine to take the edge
off vs gum, patches, etc. The only down side is
that you have to buy online, but a few smoke shops
are starting to carry it. The website I use is
getsnus dot com. Check it out...it helped me a
ton.

Smoked for 20+ years and quit many times. Finally quot for good Jan 2000. Seemed like the right thing and the right time. Was always out of breath, on allergy pills, always having upper respiratory problems, had an asthma inhaler for bad days, colds..........
Since I quit smoking I've had less than 5 colds in 10 years. hardly ever take an allergy pill, couldn't tell you the last time I picked up my inhaler, but I'd still like a smoke some times. Seems like they bother some people more than others and it was bothering me a lot. Still short of breath some days.

Im 21 and have been smoking for 4 years, last time i quit was for 6 months that was 2 years ago, after reading this thread i dont think its worth it, just because theyre so expensive and the health issues that come along, i love smoking but im done. plus my dad quit 2 weeks ago so i have no one to smoke with.

At this time my predicament is pretty close to yours I think
In '94 I was diagnose with sever COPD (emphysema) together with cirrhosis of liver.
I quit smoking and drinking at that time and never looked back. Since then I have been getting by pretty well although I was always real short of breath. This last November my emphysema suddenly got real bad, real fast. Right now I cannot even walk 100 feet with oxygen without having to stop. Best guess the MD gives me is bout 5 months before I step over the rainbow.
What can I tell you? We all made our own life styles knowing about the medical implications of tobacco, liquor and whatever else we ran through our systems. Government isn't to blame. Nor are the tobacco companies. We all made our own decisions. Some pay earlier than others, some don't pay at all but you and me at least are paying for it.

My wife & I came from smoking households from the 60's & 70's. Neither of us ever smoked, nor experimented with it.

I have no background of the stress you are going thru, but I do have one thing to pass on.

As kids, being raised in smoking households, we never were aware of the smoke smell that we carried in our bodies and clothes. Several years ago, my son had a friend over that came from a smoking household (the friend didn't smoke that I was aware of). When I walked into my son's closed room to introduce myself to his friend, I was overwhelmed with the smell of the friend's clothes. I went out and talked with my wife about it. We never really realized what we, as kids, smelled like when we went to visit non-smoking friends.

I have learned that quitting any addiction is a big decision to be made and deal with daily. It involves change, not only in not picking up a cigarette, but all the things that used to go along with it. Going out for a beer, card games with the guys, hunting, what ever you used to do while smoking, consider giving up them for a while and finding something else go occupy your time with.

Yes, gaining weight is often a part of quitting smoking. This is due to picking up a replacement to the smoking (snacking), plus your body now isn't working as hard fighting the pollutants you were putting in it.

Seeking help from friends and strangers on how they beat the habit is a good start. Work with your doctor too. There are things to help take the edge off, but it will need to be a decision that you make and stick to.

Best of luck in your future!

You might start a daily or weekly chart as to how much you are saving by not smoking, and put that money in a jar. After a year, go out and buy yourself a tractor with your saved money as your prize.

Pete

(quoted from post at 16:06:55 04/05/10) Almighty God. And how you see fit to get to Him, theologically and from a Christian perspective, is your business.
As long as it's Christian. Right? What if I'm not?
Years ago most people's religion was was kept to themselves. I don't hold the same views as you so don't assume I am praying to the same God. I'm kind of thinking that I don't have to [b:9b7e961fd0]get right[/b:9b7e961fd0] with anyone.I Lived a decent life ,was pleasant to everyone and tried to be a good neighbor to all. I don't think I needed Jesus to tell me how to do things
One thing I would never do is advise one to get right wih anyone except themselves
Oops. Sorry Dunk. I didn't mean to steal your thread

Jon.....just to set the record straight,I started smoking at 7 years old and smoked for 65 years. don b 1

Well I had to fudge a little bit!
For the record I'm still proud of ya.

Do I believe that Christianity is an exclusive religion? Yes I do. I do not believe that every person will go to a greater reward after death. I do wonder as to how the Almighty will handle the Jews, but that is for Him to decide. Also, I take the Bible to be the fountainhead of my faith, and I believe that prayer is the main mechanism we use to get closer to God.

JW, as you may have noticed I first said "I hope you have made peace with your maker. Godspeed", I wrote it in such a manner to stay largely vague and at the same time convey my sincere thoughts on your impending death. I meant you no malice, nor will I apologize for what I wrote.

It appears that you are embittered over the issue of religion. If so, you are not the first to be so exercised, nor will you be the last, but my hope is that you take the time you have left and make "peace with your maker" and square your accounts with whomever and however you see fit.

Godspeed.
