In one of our pastures, we have a giant ash tree that has just died in the last month. I have not yet brought it down to check if it is half rotten or still mostly solid, but I have a question or two to ask.

How advisable or realistic is it to try to have that old tree milled into some sort of furniture or memento? I live in central Texas near College Station and I know of no wood mill within a one hour radius. East Texas with the logging should have something, but not here.

Do any of you have any suggestions on how to proceed? If nothing can be done, I will cut and split it up for firewood.

Thanks.

I would try to find a local portable sawmill to come in and mill them if that is what you want.

I got 30 dead white Ash trees from Europen invasife "Emerald AsH Bore" All MIchigan under quartine (But bugs will still spread). Bottom line- No market for white ash- best use fire wood. Also nobody wants to custom saw 1 tree.

Ash makes really nice flooring. When I built my house I had some local Amish mill some for me. I installed it in my office and li-barry.

Another inexpensive option for milling if you only have a couple of logs is take them to a tractor show with a mill. The shows are always needing logs to demonstrated on. Then you haul the wood off.

That is how it works up here in Ohio, your milage may vary. But is worth asking around.

I'll have to look for those, I go through hallitsville alot have never seen the mill. Had no idea any thing like that was in that part of the country

I'll second that. Check arboristsite.com too for portable millers

Even if the borer has entered your area, you can still mill the
logs and use them on site for building purposes.

Great for timber frames and flooring. Light and strong. Likes to
end check, seal the log ends as soon as you buck them.

Here is a nice little mortise and tenon wood rack out of ash I
milled.

It holds enough wood to heat the house over a week in -0 oF
weather, almost two if the temps are about freezing

When I can get the time to bring the thing down I will know more about any pests that have killed the thing. At the least it will produce about 3-5 cords of wood. Thanks for the replies.
