OT big game rifles?

For any hunters out there.. what are you using to take big game with?

Currently my 'elephant' gun has now been upgraded to a .416 Rigby CZ Safari Special.

just wondering what everybody else uses to tenderize their shoulder meat? :)

Nothing around here to justify anything that big, though I know guy who has a .45/70 with HOT 405 grain handloads. Says it kicks worse than his .375 H&H. (I've never fired a .375, but I know the .45/70 is plain brutal with those loads!) What would you use a .416 on in FL? Hogs?
I have a Marlin .30/30 that my Dad bought for me when I was 14. Still take it after deer on occasion. Usually carry a Rem. 700 in .25-06. 120's for deer, 87 gr. for varmints. Sometimes also use my Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag for deer. Pretty sure I could get two with one bullet if I could get them lined up. :) 300 gr. Hornady XTP's at roughly 1200 fps. (10 1/2" barrel) BTW, I saw a dandy yesterday - 8 or 10 points and probably 18" spread, and still in velvet and growing. Enjoying the corn, soybeans, alfalfa and clover.

there's be nothing left of a hog after a .416 rigby hit it.. not even a red vapor cloud.

I use 30-30 for most small stuff at short distance.. or 30-06 for everything else in florida.. and even that is really BIG for a fl ferral hog.

.416 will quite literally take down rhino and elephant.. water and cape buffalo.. etc. truly 'big game' and dangerous game.

Don't have the need for anything that big myself. I still hunt deer with a Winchester 30-30. Most folks around here hunt deer with 30-06 or 7mm magnums. There's limited elk licenses being issued via a lottery here in PA, and I guess I might need something bigger if I ever won that lottery.

There seems to be a new trend with more and more people hunting bear with long barreled .50 caliber magnum hadguns, some with sopes on them.

I've got both a 50 magnum revolver, and a 50 action express semi auto. I like the semi auto better. the 50 magnum is truly too much gun.

If I was hunting.. i'd go witht he 460 nitro express chambering.. better balistics...

I have a 44mag colt anaconda that also had a scope on it.. same deal.. not my idea of a hunting gun. however.. the 44 mag does make a good carry piece in the woods when hog hunting and you think there might be a close encounter...

Don't have anything to hunt big enough to justify upgrading the good ole 30-06. usually hunt deer with the 25-06 flat shooting no kick and drops them in their tracks. my friend has a barrett 50 cal that is fun to shoot. way too much gun for anything practical.

What exactly are you calling big game? North American big game such as Elk, Moose, Bear, Mule Deer, White tail Deer or, Safari type big game?

Guy I know Elk Hunts with .270 with hand made 220 grain cartridges.

IMHO, 7 mm rem mag with take care of about anything in North America.

I hunt Elk with a Remington A3-03 30-06 I sporterized and use Hornady Light mag 165 gr. BTSP. Great flat shooting rifle. I like using my 270 as well for Mule deer. How often do you get to go hunting elephants? and where?

(quoted from post at 10:37:27 08/11/11) safari.. like cape buffalo, elephant, rhino.. etc..

Hmmm I ain't seen any of those critters in MN except in the zoo. For some unknown reason they just will not allow you to hunt there.

I shoot a Ruger M77 in Wenchester 270 and a Ruger Mini 14 chambered for Rem 6.8 SPC for deer.

30.06 will take any North American big game animal animal.

My newest it a Finish sniper rifle based on the Mosin Nagant receiver with a Finish Bull barrel on it. It uses the Russian 7.62X54 which I reload. I still have to modify the bolt handle so as to be able to work it with the scope on it. Should be an easy shoot out to 500 plus yard once all set up.

My gun of choice is .270 win. How do you like the 6.8 SPC? I was considering getting one of those in a Ranch Rifle like the Ruger Mini 14.

In that case, the North American big bore cartridges such as .416 Remington Magnum, .416 Weatherby Magnum, .458 Winchester Magnum, and .460 Weatherby Magnum. And, British big bore cartridges, including the famous .450 Nitro Express, .470 NE, and .600 NE. All made for thick skinned animals. "Elephant guns" as they are called.

I don't see the need to hunt those types of game but that is just me. My uncle would beg to differ.

I shoot a 30-06 for Mulie's & a 7MM WSM for Elk or Moose....the WSM sure let me know it was on my shoulder when I first got it. Good but pad & a Varis muzzle brake took care of that though!!
Shoots like a dream now...'yotes at 5&600 yards are toast!!

For Elk & Mule Deer I used a Ruger M77R in 7 MM Rem Mag. 165 grain Nosler partition. I like to carry my Ruger security 6 in 357 6". In Ohio we can not use a centerfire on deer. So it has been either a 50 cal Muzzle loader or a shotgun with slugs or a pistol.
The Remington Copper solid slugs are either 50 or 54 cal 437 grain. They shoot really well from a rifled barrel. They just cost too much at $15 for 5 slugs. They also hurt the shoulder.
Good topic Sounder!

(quoted from post at 08:53:55 08/11/11) there's be nothing left of a hog after a .416 rigby hit it.. not even a red vapor cloud.

Maybe you SHOULD be using your .416 for hogs... other landowners might like you for it!

that makes my shoulder hurt just thinking of it!shot a 458 off the bench a few times,I decided that was just a little too much gun for a 150 lb whitetail!shot a custom mauser in 30-06 last couple of seasons, building one in 243 win now if i get it finished in time.largest cal i have left is a blown out 308 norma mag necked up to 8mm.rifle weighs about 10 lbs so its really nice to shoot.dang arthritis in my should has about put a stop to my fun shooting though.

There are few openings in my state where you could shoot 600 yards let alone hit something as small as a coyote! Longest shot I ever made at a live animal was 353 yards at an Elk with a 30 06 with 180 gr. Hornady Lite magnums. I was lucky, but I cant see shooting at any thing 600 yards let alone hit it. That getting close to a third of a mile!

Though not a hunter, I do own a LH 300 Weatherby Magnum MK V. I've never shot anything with it but did try to sight it in once.

My left shoulder and arm was purple and yellow down to the elbow for 10 days or so. Haven't shot it since.

when those 45-70 marlins first came out i had to have one, wasnt too bad with the rounds i had loaded up for my old trapdoor springfeild.but i was talking to a guy i knew and he sent me some of his reloads,500 grain cast bullet with a gas check loaded up all they could stand,I think i shot two! that gun hurt worse than anything i'd ever shot.it didnt stay long.that narrow buttplate with heavy loads would dang near cut your arm off!

I am a .270 bolt fan. Fast flat and straight. 30.06 destroys too much.
I also carry a 3030 Marlin for close in work.

We have an M1 Garand that we use occasionally. What a gun!! 30.06

Dean,

I"ve got a Remington model 700 classic chambered for .300 Weatherby Mag. The first thing I did was put a muzzle brake (break?) on it before I fired it. It jumps up, but doesn"t kick too bad. I use it every deer season.

(quoted from post at 11:03:40 08/11/11) My gun of choice is .270 win. How do you like the 6.8 SPC? I was considering getting one of those in a Ranch Rifle like the Ruger Mini 14.

The Ruger Mini 14 is available in 6.8. The Ranch isn't. Reason being is that the 6.8 is designed to allow you to change the upper reciever on the AR15/M16/M4 variants and the mag well on the loower reciever needs no modifications. SO the only change to the MINI 14 is the barrel. I like it real well. It shoots a 270 bullet. I'm using Hornady .277" (270) 110 GR V-Max bullets for reloading. Of the bench at 100 yeards I'm getting 1" groups. The round is effective out to 300 plus yards. Weight and size of a 30.30 but much more effective range. I hunt areas where 50 to 600 yard shots are possible. If I'm hunting some place where the ranges are less than 250 or so it's the Mini 14......longer than 250 the 270 shooting Nosler 140 Spitzers.

I also reload 9MM (plinking only) 38 SP (plinking only) 357 Mag (concealed carry) 45 ACP (concealed carry) 30.30 (for BIL) 308/7.62 NATO for my M1A1 30.06 (for my son and SIL) and 300 Win Mag (for a BIL).

i do.. a colt 500 magnum chambered in 500 s&w magnum

too much gun IMHO.. makes it a play toy unless you have arms and hands like a linebacker..

neat bragging piece.. but for use.. my .50AE semi auto AMT automag 5 is a tad more user friendly.

The only dangerous game I've ever wanted to shoot at has been bears and for them a 300 win mag is the choice. For me anyway. That 416 may be better, but unless someone wants to send me one....

Big enuf in La.! Ruger Intl 308. Good for 250>300 yds.
Took this ol'boy at 250 on the run. All about where you put the bullet. I don't suppose any of Disney's big critters every get over in your neck o'the woods do they Sounder?

i'm pretty sure that .416 rigby will handle anything currently walking the earth..

it's just not real user friendly though.. :)

nor cost effective.. I've seen single rounds go for 17$ :) :)

Soundguy -- My two cents after nearly 60 years: In a long gun, 30.06 is all you need for anything native to North America, and it has more loads and bullet types available than any other caliber. You can get heavy loads with 220-grain slugs that will rock your shoulder almost like a .300 magnum or light loads with sabot slugs that have no more recoil than a .22 magnum. In a handgun, try the Taurus 454 Casull. The gun frame was designed specially for the caliber, ported barrel, etc. It has nearly the knock-down oomph of the 50-cal, but you can fire it one-handed with no ill effects.

Happy Hunting.

You mean .470 nitro express.

Just go for a .460 Weatherby Mag:
500 gr bullet at 2700 ft/s and 8100 ft/lb energy, only drops 10 inches at 300 yards. Better than the .470 and .500 nitro express.

What else do you need????

Reb----you wrote---"In a long gun, 30.06 is all you need for anything native to North America, and it has more loads and bullet types available than any other caliber."

Over 50 years ago, an uncle of mine, gave me the same information almost verbatim....he went on to complete 25 years in the Navy, competing with and instructing members of the Navy Rifle/Pistol teams.

After retiring he trained law enforcement officers for another decade.

I have used the 30-06 for over 50 years and won"t disagree with the advice he gave me when I was a young man.

What a great topic!
My gun of choice is a M77 Ruger in .338 Winchester Magnum, all the gun anyone ever needs in North America! I shoot Barnes "X" hand loads from 175 grain to 250 grain, also 300 solids, my moose loads are 200 grain "X" chronographed at 3200 FPS, it shoots fairly flat and gets the job done!
I also have a Parker Hale 7MM mag (my backup moose rifle), and too many other guns. I have taken bear, moose and deer, but nothing brings the hair up like a bear at close range, my last one was taken at 18 feet.
I'll never get to hunt African big game (by choice) and haven't a use for a handgun, as we cannot carry them here in Ontario for hunting.

i like to throw a curve ball topic some time.

too bad about not being able to carry a pistol hunting.

methinks that goes agfainst basic self defense.

glad I lie in a place that has some basic human rights.

good luck. you got great taste in guns by the way. nice calibers mentioned!

I think it would be nice to carry a .22 pistol to dispatch when bow hunting deer ETC., other than that, I haven't a use for a handgun.
Brian

about the only thing I use a handgun for is self defense.. whether that is carrying during hunting in case of close encounters, or carrying in public in case of close encounters :)

Here in PA, you can't carry any firearm when hunting deer during bow season. The only thing you're allowed to use a .22 pistol or rifle for is small game or dispatching animals when fur trapping.

yep.22 here is only for small game / varmiont.. not for deer.. I don't even hunt deer though... too small here in florida. I have big dogs bigger than most florida deer.. :)

now hogs.. I carry a 44mag with me when hog hunting.. that and either a 30-30 or 30-06

I believe in clean kills, however, once in a while you get a shot that for whatever reason does not achieve that; I think a handgun would be an asset in not allowing the animal any unnecessary suffering.
I know that we can't make rules just for some of the people, but that would work for me!
And yes, if I was hunting hogs, I would want a backup gun!
They are just nasty, but tasty!
Brian

This is my tack driver. Ruger 77, 25-06, polished throat, floating barrel, Unertl 15X Ultra Varmint scope. shoots 1 hole groups off a bench, but hard to hold on target off hand. Dropped a hog dead in his tracks with a lucky shot using hot loaded ammo topped with a solid 100 grain bullet, swaged from a 22 casing. That was 30 years ago. I'm not steady enough for that kind of shooting anymore.

Yep you full of it again maybe you can't but I see them at the end of my field almost every day and that is out at 500 yards so yep you full of bull as you are 99% of the time

Actually I meant the .460 S&W magnum... IE.. another pistol calibre similar to the .500 S&W magnum we were talking about. the .460 has better balistic data than the .500
