There is a problem with high school kids shooting peoples cats in our small town.
A few weeks ago some kids shot a cat in the cat owners front yard - the small children at home watched it happen - then another cat came home to nurse its kittens with an arrow stuck in its body and died while the kittens where nursing.
Now my brother who has a mental disability watched some kids with a 22 a spot light and a pickup kill his cat across the road from his house! Along with many other reports of dead pet cats being found.
Of course small town politics seems to be keeping any charges from being brought on these kids 'cause some of them are Jocks and boy are we cautious not to get our basketball or wrestling team in trouble!?
I am not a super cat lover but my god do the parents of these kids want to encourage this cruel behavior?
It is making me sick - and not shure what to do about it. These kids think it is a big joke and the parents seem to think so as well.
Any suggestions?
 
maybe tty getting nearest "big city" animal rights wackos involved,and or a little press from local tv.better to let them bring the media if possible you know how smalltown politics are and these kids seem like the kind who would try to get even if you brought any badpress on them
 
They say what people do to animals is a stepping stone to what they will be doing to people in the future. A police chief in a small town here in SE MN was caught shooting peoples cats last year. He was arrested by the county shreiff and brought up on animal cruelity charges. He lost his job and state officers license and was run out of town. You should go higher on the food chain, maybe county shreiff or attorny. I am no lover of stray cats but to shot somones pet on the pet owners property is going to far.
 
Google around a little and you might be able to find a news article from the last day or two about a fellow being charged with shooting what he contends were feral cats living under a bridge at a border crossing down in Texas. He maintained they were killing endangered birds (piping plovers??) thereabouts. Problem is they lived under a bridge, and the border agents at the bridge were feeding the cats, so the charge stems from them not being feral and there are laws against shooting pets.

I've got no problem with humane disposal, including a well-placed shot if that's what it takes, of feral animals that present a problem. What you describe, though, is an entirely different matter, and I'd be raising holy old he11 and looking for some organized help.
 
If I ever caught anyone shooting one of my cats, should they accidently get outside, I'd probably have to go to prison for a long time. I really don't know for sure what I'd do, the thought scares me.
 
This is a good project for PETA.. There is no excuse for people going around shooting cats.. I know a lot of people do not like cats, but on the other hand, cats do not attack and maul children... I like cats, and take offense at anyone that hurts one..
 
Shooting firearms, regardless the calibur is illegal within city limits in any town I know of and for good reason. The safety issue of a stray bullet or a ricochet hitting an innocent bystander is very serious. If one of these kids shot anything in my yard, and I have kids around, I'd confiscate the weapon pronto or have the sheriff confiscate the weapon. An anonymous call if need be. Kids shooting peoples pet cats for fun also shows a mental attitude that only escalates to dogs, then cows, then someones horse and then someone finds their tractor full of holes. Nip it in the bud and make an example of one of them and maybe the rest will back off. Something else you could try is getting the town mayor or town board to address the issue by reminding them that the town could be sued if there are any damages or injuries from them allowing kids to shoot firearms within city limits. Money always talks and gets their attention, especially if a lawyer wants to take it away from them. So just say your concerned about public safety and your concerned about the town being sued and now its the town board and mayors problem as it should be. Thats all part of their job and their responsibility to protect the public. Don't let anyone tell you it's ok because there are too many stray cats around. The stray cats can be trapped if need be and any pet with a collar can be returned to its owner.
 
PETA wont do crap!!! They are a radical, bunch of left wing loons who are more into making a name for themselves.

A local SPCA might be more responsive and quicker to act.

Get on your local party line show and name names if you know them.

Write letters into the local papers.

Go to the local Family Services, if these kids are juveniles then this type of behavior is indicative of worse types of abuse in later life.

Make as much stink as you can.

Dont let these type of morons ruin a peaceful town.

I think you mean the ASPCA. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is a much different organization that mainly opposes research, harvesting, and domestication of animals. They have been accused of fronting and funding the ALF (Animal Liberation Front).

A far as the cat shooting, it appalls me. I cannot think of a reason to go around doing this, much less how to prevent it. I do believe that complaining about shooting within city limits would be your best route. Identifying those that are involved would be the next step. Not sure where to proceed from there...

sad part is that I am on the kids side ,as I have to many feral cats in my neighborhood and many die from lead .
 
not a cat fan but thats uncalled for.
First go the states attorney and give them the names of all known to be involved.
then call spca and do the same.
then call state police and county sheriffs office and complain about discharge of a firearm in the city.
If this dont get them nailed I dont know what to tell you.
The gun discharge and the state police should be good enough.
Also everyone that sees it happen needs to call 911, it will be logged in each time and the SA will have that to use in court
 
Pretty sorry crop of teens that apply their imagination and energy to kill someone else's pet or working stock.We keep a couple of spayed cats here for the work they do,our choice is mice,moles,and snakes or cats.I'm not a cat lover,but respect and tolerate them for the work they do.Occasionally I have to kill a tom cat that comes around after these spayed females because they are destructive.Peeing down the cowl vents of my brides Cadillac got one killed recently,it took $145 of cabin air filters to fix that.They've torn up window screens,peed on our doors,been vandals.Animal cruelty penalties are severe,as they should be.I use plenty of gun to make it as humane as possible,and only as a last resort.We start with loud noise,next a Daisy bb gun,a 12 gauge load of #4s or #6s in a situation that make a killing shot certain finally.I get no joy from it.
 
Don't care for cats myself, but that would be little consulation if a stray bullet killed an innocent bystander trying to watch tv in his living room. Lots of them around here get lead poison as well, but I know where the lead is going, and have no close neighbors to catch stray lead.
 
Why not tell your town name, and state. Maybe a few E mails to the mayor might help. There is no reason for this to be happening in your town, or anyother town. This is one of the reasons I don't let my cats have the run of the neighborhood. Stan
 
Well, I wish you luck. Been through this sort of stuff more times than I care to contemplate.

Sometimes a little vigilante justice works well.

Vidio tape the the kids doing it and send to the local police along with a note saying a copy has also been sent to the national news. They will put their thumb on them right now as no one wants that kind of national attention.

Davis, I like cats too but my son ended up in the hospital for two days when he tried to pick up our cat. He was bitten and scratched repeatedly when he tried to pick her up and consequently ended up with infections and very high temperature. She was an expensive Persian which seemed to be bipolar sometimes craving attention and other times rejecting humans altogether. She was soon after put down by the humane society
 
Leland ---- I'm with you --- I know it's a crime to discharge a fire arm in any town -- so it must be Country folks who are complaining ..

I see stray cats all the time in the Country --- most generally folks leave their cats in the Country to get rid of them -- and most generally they are killing birds ---

I did have a cat once -- but it started to walk away -- then it never came back one day -- and I suppose I deserve what I get for what I had...

I say --- if you love your cat --- keep them home and not running lose like a wild animal -- OR pay the consequences.....
 
I'd beat the tar out of someone if they shot one of my cats. When I was a kid, my neighbor shot one of my cats for peeing in his flower bed. I got back at him the best I could, I went to the local book store and pulled about 50 magazine subscription cards out, filled them out in his name, checked the "bill me later" box and sent them in. I picked stuff like "Jet" and "Vibe" that he would not ever want to read. I also included "Cat Fancy" magazine. Now I would skip the middle man and give him a beating.
 
It doesn't look like that sort of thing goes on without the attention of the law everywhere.

GALVESTON, Texas - A prominent bird-watcher on trial for fatally shooting a cat thought he was taking aim at a feral cat that had no owner, his attorney said.

Testimony began Tuesday in the animal cruelty trial of Jim Stevenson, founder of the Galveston Ornithological Society. He's accused of shooting the cat with a .22-caliber rifle in November 2006 near the San Luis Bridge Pass in Galveston.

Defense attorney Tad Nelson told jurors that Stevenson, 54, believed he was killing a cat that was threatening endangered species of birds.

Nelson said Stevenson's research of the law led him to believe killing the cat was legal, and he would never have done so if he knew it had an owner.

To convict Stevenson of animal cruelty, prosecutors must prove that the cat had an owner.

"The evidence is going to show that this is not a feral cat, it was somebody's domesticated cat that got love," said Paige Santell, assistant district attorney for Galveston County.

Santell said the cat was the pet of toll-bridge worker John Newland, who fed and cared for several strays and even had named the cat "Mama Cat."

Veterinarian Timothy Harkness, a prosecution witness, testified that his autopsy of the cat led him to classify the cat as domesticated because the animal had commercial food in its stomach and a higher degree of muscle and fat than is typically found in feral cats.

In response to defense questioning, Harkness acknowledged that feral cats who eat commercial food left out by volunteers are not necessarily domesticated.

Officer John Bertolino of the Galveston police, testifying for the prosecution, identified photos showing bedding, toys and food trays that Newland had placed under the bridge for the cats.

During cross-examination, Nelson suggested that Stevenson may not have been able to see the food trays and therefore did not know the cat was being cared for.

Bertolino also said Newland was clearly upset by the cat's death.

"He was very upset; he was crying, actually," Bertolino said.

If found guilty, Stevenson could face up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
 
Hmmmm, not sure what you are implying, but I would find myself agreeing 100% with Mr. Bob. I also attend church each Sunday, and I have never had the minister tell me I have to stand by and watch others kill animals on my property and not defend it because that is putting that creature on a higher level than God. Certainly would not kill somone over an animal, but also wouldn't hesitate to hold anyone accountable for their actions by holding them by necessary means until law enforcments arrived on the scene.
If ANY animal is on my property, you'd better be dealing with me first before you have any interaction with that creature. If it is your animal, I'll help you get it back in any way I can. If it is not yours, leave it be. Period. It's a matter of respect for any landowner. Nothing more, Nothing less.
 
His defense might prevail in NYS as the ENCON law there allows the killing of cats by anyone holding a hunting license IF said cat is hunting protected wildbirds or with a protected bird in its mouth.

But as far these kids go, get the state authorities involved quick, forget the locals, before they turn their sights onto something bigger.

Many years ago a horse was shot and killed by local druggies with a .22 rifle. They claimed they were just trying to scare it. Door to door investigations lead us (I was an ENCON Officer) to their house. Hours later they were dragged from their beds, cuffed, charged, and later convicted of state felonies.

The law does work.....not always, but often enough.
 
This is wrong. Time and time again if parents and or the local athorities let this go it will evolve into more and more serious issues.
 
I would call the state department of conservation in the state where you live. While I am not an advocate of letting your animals run loose, what these kids are doing and the local law and parents covering it up is morally wrong and it is illegal. The state department of conservation can charge from this point of view:
It is illegal in Illinois (don't know about where you are) to shoot a gun from a vehicle, moving or not, and it is also illegle to use a light to hunt and shoot from a vehicle.
It is also against the law where we live to treat animals cruelly. A few have went to jail around here for that. A call to your local TV station also might get things done.
 
Not a cat fan here but my daughter shure is and that killing of peoples pets is just wrong. I cant figure out why someone would do such a thing.

I would check with the state laws you might be able to get them on breaking a state law where the state will step in an throw the book at them. Cruelty to animals.
Cats have the legal right to go where ever they want to. A lot od state have that law from way back when rats were a big problem.

If it was me I would just have some friends catch them out in the boonies and teach them a good lesson about good behavior.

Many years ago we had a kid in our town that tortured and killed pets.He went on to doing this to people and ended up dead himself,shot by a potential victum.

Its illegal to discharge a fire arm in city limits.
 
What I was implying is that --- I see -- Mr. Bob was implying he would kill a person cause they killed an amimal ----

and if you agree with Mr. Bob -- then your animal is your god ---

killing your cat on your property is wrong for others --- but if they are running like a wild animal on another's property in the Country -- which I have seen --- that's a different story.

what's the difference if your cat is killed by a hunter in the woods -- or it's killed by a fox or coyote --- if you love your cat -- take care of it and keep it where it's safe...
 
y"all need a chinese resturant the cats dissapear and no one sees a thing cats are a high commodity in these parts as we have 4 chinese resturants within 20 miles of each other hard to even see a cat let alone have it for a pet
 
I do agree with you. I guess the only thing I'm either not agreeing with you on, or else not understanding you correctly is, No one has any right to mess with ANYTHING on MY property without my permission. If my cat is anywhere on my 240 acres, nobody had better even think about messing with it because that person had NO right to be there in the first place. My cat, a neighbors cat, a wild cat, I don't care. My property. Nobody has any business there. I will prosocute tresspassing and any other convictions that apply, to the fullest extent, by means of the law. That is all I'm saying.
 
I implied no such thing. There are many ways of creating misery for some scumbag with out killing them.

You've got it right. What's on my property is my business, and mine alone. If the cat, dog or other critter is my neighbor's, I't try to see that they got it back home.
 
What a BEAUTIFUL Little girl and Very Precious indeed ------ but ----- Never Trust an Animal -- cause things can go wrong --- and when they do --- your going to hang that animal when they do harm to your Precious little one --- trust me -- it has happened .....
 
What you said in your First Note (( If you caught anyone shooting your cat -- you probably have to go to prison for a very long time )) --- that to me is implying that you would probably kill a person to do that ---

Just take a lot of pictures and apply a law-suit with Judge Judy -- you will come out a winner...

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. For right now I have decided to stay out of this - I am not scared to speak my mind but in this case considering my brother is involved I will stay quiet to protect him from anymore involvement with these losers.
Not to say these boys might get a little "Surprise" one of these days.
On a funny note I see one of the kids has totaled his GMC Jimmy - the right front wheel is pushed all the way into the door! Bad Karma?
