OT dodge 2500 transmision

hi looking at getting an 03 dodge cummins with an auto transmission. i have heard that these are prone to failure wondering if anyone has had any problems or experiance with this. the truck has 130,000 miles on it thanks tim

ANY auto with that many miles is prone to failure. Who knows, the guy is probably selling it because the transmission's already slipping!

The 03 had an upgraded trans that seems to stand up to the Cummins much better than previous models. A lot depends on how the truck was used and whether the trans was maintained. Many people who haul heavy with these trucks still opt for the six speed. The engine is superb, the rest of it is just a truck. Pay your money and take your chances.

I'm pretty sure an '03 would have the 48RE transmission which is alot heavier than the 47RE used on older trucks. The good news is that there are several aftermarket companies that can build those transmissions with better valve bodies, triple disc torque converters and billet shafts to make them hold up to almost anything you can throw at them.

My 01 has 184,000 miles with an auto and still runs good. Just maintain it.

an HO has a 48re. The lower horsepower motor has the 47re . I almost bought an 03, until I found out it had an 47re. you see I have one in my 96 ,3500 dodge and have replaced it twice in 240k once at 116k and another at 217k. the rest of the truck has been great. gets about 18mpg around town,and 10mpg hauling a 16k pound trailer

A lot of the time...folks think the transmission is going on those things, and all that is wrong is the throttle positioning switch.
I pulled over 24,000 1500 miles and the torque started slipping when it engaged. I figured it was gone so I went to ATS and bought the works. Heavy kits, torque, the works. After we got it installed...the TPS was bad.
That was 200K ago...with a stepped up engine.
Now pulling 10,000 in the hills on interstate still gives me 14+ pulling a 25ft gooseneck.
Buy the rig...and enjoy it. It will impress you.
If you want it to pull the world take it to Jim Jessup in North Vernon Indiana....he can make her talk.

Have two, both Cummins. Just had the '96 rebuilt two months ago at 240K. Had the '02 rebuilt at 25K. They do have a reputation, and not a good one. Dodge didn't even question it when I drove the '02 down there stuck in first at about 2 MPH after relatively mild use. The '96 I use to death, the '02 pretty much stays in the barn. I often work out at an oval track that had a fleet of about 8 or 10 of them provided by Dodge, all 4x4's equipped for safety safari, pretty much used twice per year (nascar in July, IRL in September) and by the third season, about 1/2 had them rebuilt. They were '01's or '02's. Had Fords last year, and am pretty sure Chevy's this year.
