can a car battery be used to "jump-off" a riding mower battery. Lack of rain in the southeast means our lawn hasn"t been cut since mid june and the mower battery died from sitting idle.

Last used in mid June? I'd say that you need a new battery. You can save yourself a lot of time by buying one, forget the charging up routine, it's a waste of time. Get a new one in my humble opinion.

If all batteries went completely dead in a month then we are all in trouble.

Just jump it the car alternator won't put in more than the battery can take so don't worry about that either.

MYTHs sometimes they sure get in the way of good old common knowledge.

Plus to plus and Negative to Negative. They can explode if reverse connected. Connecting the last connection to a metal ground not at the battery will also be safer (reduces sparks near the hydrogen gas in the battery) JimN

How many amps do you think the car battery is capable of putting out? 40 from an alt is nothing.
Car started, car shut off...don't matter, I do it all the time too.
Sometimes I'll even throw the 50 amp booster charger on it if I don't feel like messing around with jumper cables.

I do this regularly. The lawn and garden batteries that we are forced to use due to space issues last about two years around here. My old man came up with a great solution. He bungeed a car battery to the running board and it lasted nearly six years. The mower died before that battery did. Starter and battery setup was pulled and used on the neighbors for a few years after that. HTH Aaron
