OT/Electrical Question

When I worked construction as master mechanic the electricians first tied a nylon string to a thing they called a "rat". It was a ball of something like a nerf ball. Then they poked the ball into the conduit a foot or so and then put the business end of a powerful air compressor used to run jack hammers into the conduit and blew the rat out the other end of the conduit. Then they tied a nylon rope to the string and pulled the rope through the conduit. Then they tied the bundle of wires to the rope and started pulling. When it got too hard for two or three men to pull they had a thing that looked like a Rigid pipe threading machine that had a drum on it like a ships sails are pulled with. The rope was wrapped a couple of rounds on the drum and one may then could easily pull the rope as the drum turned and the rest of the rope and wire was pulled out the end of the conduit. That was some more strong rope!!!!!

Back in my Electrician days...

My boss used to be the worlds worst about under sizing conduit.

He was a penny pincher!!!!

I have used a wench truck to pull large wire, thru a too small conduit, but we got by with it.

But then that was back in the day....

Use a fish tape after the conduit is installed. David...........

I'm still getting to the part about nearly pulling the concrete block wall out of the back of the grocery store that we were installing a new deli in.

No telling how much wire lube we used on that job...

After that I sized the conduit on my jobs.

And he didn't open his mouth about it.

10-2 romax does not pull through 3/4 pvc very easily.I recommend 10' at a time.

The "rat" also works with a good shop vac.

10 feet at a time will be much easier and faster (unless you are only going 20' total)!

Romex should not be installed in conduit, not code compliant. Strands of THHN/THWN should be used. If the conduit is buried it is considered a "wet" location and THWN should be used but most is dual rated these days. Stranded will pull more easily than solid.

Everybody had an answer. However, nobody has said exactly how far is the total run of wire and pipe.30 to 50 feet it probably doesn,t matter how you do it. 500 feet and up with a few slight direction changes is a whole differnt story.

So he doesn't give a R.A. about any 'authority's' code/law/regs, just, "is it EASIER to install one 10 ft section at a time or pull all at the end"?. Well, call in a rocket scientist! :evil:
