OT: Extra keys

I carry a key in each of the front pockets of my pants so that if one key is locked in, I can readily open the door. My wife agrees that the extra key is a good idea for her, but where for her to carry it? Purse is not good, it might get locked in the car. One idea is on a shoelace around the neck. Problems with that, too. Creative ideas that are also practical? With so much plastic in cars now, finding place to hide a magnetic holder that is both accessible and hidden is very difficult.

I'd wire one into a frame or other place you can't see. Might not be the easiest to get to, but it should be there if you ever need it, and likely won't. You don't need 'easy' access, you just need to be able to.

You may be able to cable tie one up under there or even try glue ?

True. I have had trouble finding a good place to put the hid-a-key ever since they put the hood release inside of the vehicle.
My 2004 truck came with a touch pad entry on the door. This is the best thing since sliced bread. Now a days, I just throw the keys on the floor and lock it when ever I need to. Also, a AAA card will get you into your locked car 4 times a year at no extra charge...

It might not be safe, but I have a key in the fender behind the gas cap door. Locking myself out of a car that could not be opened with wire one time was enought for me. Older pickups that you could open the hood from the front, I had a key in the windhield washer tank.

I use a plastic wire tie to attach a key inside the gas cap cover. Tie is light enough to rip off without tools. Used to keep one inside the pickup air cleaner when the hood could be opened from the outside.

A GM car or truck with Onstar. Onstar can remotelly unlock your car almost anywere's.

I kept one under the licence plate by running the plate screw thru it. I all was have pliers.

Those key pad entries are nice, until you have a dead battery and can't get in ! Everything has it's good and bad.

On my pickup I use one of the magnetic key boxes under the top lip of the bed. Can't be seen and has always stayed there.

I had a key cut for my truck and I keep it in my wallet, my reasoning is that I never go anywhere without my wallet. I did this after an incident at the farm. I was doing something and left the truck door open..after a while I heard a gust of wind blow the door shut...no problem..then I heard "Click"...whut? Click?..I walked ove rto the truck and there was this damned cat standing up against the window with her back paws on the door lock button..I was screwed..so I started carrying a key in my wallet..its saved me about three times in the last two years!

I have a 2003 GMC and plastic became the problem as mentioned , so what I did was drill a hole through a magnetic key holder, inserted a nylon zip tie and pulled it to a small loop and then inserted through that loop another longer but not totally zipped up tight Nylon zip tie and run it around one of the grill rectangles/parts. Then poked it through the inside of the grill to conceal it. When I could not find my keys one day I just pulled the extra long loop that was totally concealed inside the grill , opened the key holder and wallha -- when I started the jimmy and found my keys the VERY FIRST thing I did was to put the keys and holder back in it's hiding place -- no more worries about where to hide a key. Hope this helps....

Just Copper wire it up someplace underneath. Can wrap the key(s) in plastic electrical tape.

Learned to drive in a 55 Ford. You HAD to lock the door with the key. Still do it. You don't lock yourself out that way. Have received some funny looks though.

I always keep the door key to my car in my wallet. You could use a combination lock type holder like the realtors use.

I was driving a car older than that Ford and it too required using the key to lock the door. But I locked the key in the trunk while loading the trunk about 40 miles from home.

Well for my truck I have 2 ways of getting in if it's locked, and neither one needs a spare key. I can reach in the driverside smoker window that has the latch busted off, or I can open up the rear slider window as the plastic molding on it comes off one side and goes back on no problems.

My car is a different story. I probably should start carying a spare key in my wallet...

Have always wired a key to the frame. The wife was always locking herself out so I wired a key to the frame. The first time she locked herself out was a rainy day and she was in a dress. Has never forgot her keys since. HA
