OT Farm Insurance

I am trying to start a farm bussiness. Everyone I have been dealing with wants farm insurance to cover livestock and product liablity. I have emailed and called over two dozen insurance agents. I found two who would write a farm policy. One was an #@$. Worked 9:00ish to 4:30ish Mon - Fri. No weekend or over time. IN the end he could not find time to drive 20 miles to look at the farm to write a policy.
2nd guy was mad at me for wasting his time. My barn is build with lumber I cut with a chainsaw. Metal roofing from an old house. It wasn"t "pretty" enough to be a farm for him so he told the underwriters not to insure it.
My wife and I are now stuck with 4 months worth of products that we can"t sell because we can"t get insurance.
thanks for letting me vent. Sorry its so long.

Sir. Farms ar special items like boats etc. You need farm family or country way both are associated with farm bureau. I have close ties and can tell you YOU DON'T WANT JOE DOWN TOWN HOME AND AUTO POLICY WRITER DOING THIS. 1. FARM RATES ARE LOW COMPARED TO COMMERCIAL 2. YOU NEED PROPER COVERAGE.3. SOME HAVE A WEEKEND/CITY FARMER POLICY WHICH MAY FIT YOU if you need further help contact me i am not an agent but can help you.

I got a lot of run-around until using Farm & Family. The first year - they charged us $500 for $250,000 in coverage plus we have to pay to subscribe to the Farm Bureau newsletter. But, every year they jack our rates us - this year by 40%. I called and asked if we are being targetted for the rate hikes - and they told me they raised everybody. So, we looking around again. So far, every agent I called - wants us to cancel our policy, then have his "new' company agents come here, look our place over, and then give us the new price. So far, we refuse to do it. I want a price BEFORE we sign on, not later.
When we get all done, it might wind up that Farm & Family is the only way we can do it here in New York.

FSA! I work with the Farm Service Agency in Massachusetts. A lot of folks in Mass have insurance through Farm Family Insurance out of Glenmont NY. Like any insurance company I have heard great things about them and not so great. They do seem to be what a lot of Mass. producers have though. Your local FSA Office might have more information on other local insurance companies. I have found that unless an insurance company specializes in Ag. Insurance they do not want to touch farmers with a 10 foot pole. FSA also has crop insurance available but I am unsure if that will cover livestock. Hope this helps some.

Yes Farm Bureau provides insurance, though I'm not sure they are up there. You can't be the only farm around, why not ask your neighbors?
What your looking for is an insurance agent that has farmers or their wives working in the office, they understand what you are trying to do and what yor resources are.

My ins of 20+ years sent me a letter saying that it needed to know which of my tractors were antiques (scheduled tractors) not being used for farming and which were (unscheduled)tractors that are used in farmimg. I they now classify them all as scheduled(whatever that is)tractors. I'm expecting a bill shortly with increased rates.

Countryway ins is #1 on my crap list. They tried to cancel me because my house needed painting.Maine Ins Commission stopped them cold.I hadnt been to a doctor in ten years, now I have heart problems brought on by stress from this.Farm insurance is near impossible to get here.I have talked with many people who have no insurance at all.Farm Family is #2 on the list.Countryway tried to cancel me during the hearing process. Not permitted during the time hearing proceeds.Lets hear from more people on this problem.

No problems with either one they paid claims and provided insurance where no one else would. I believe it is harder now to get insurance than if you already have it.
