OT Go cart

I just picked up a used go cart.. Starts with out to much trouble. Has a rough idle...Governor keeps it running.....But I see the governor kick in and out...Speeds it up and slows it down..It also backfires a bit...Has not run in a year...I am leaning towards a gummed up carb...Need some input.

It is a 6hp tecumseh... OHV


Do these small engines have points or are they electronic ignition?


Its a pull start and when it is running the lights work...Sounds like it is getting enough juice.

I need to locate a engine manual..

I would try some good hi test gas and good dry gas beefore I tore anything apart.

OPen the main jet an eighth to quarter turn(counter clockwise) and see if it runs better. May run rich(black smoke) later. Turn it back in if it does.

I don't know about Tecumseh but B&S switched to electronic ignition several years ago. Tecumseh is out-of-business now and parts may be a hard to find. Run some Seafoam or Berryman B12 through the carb.

as smelled good. He did say he added some gas. I added some more to it.. I need some sea foam for my boat, may dump some in the gocart to and try that. Looks like a piece of cake to pull the carb.

Which one is the main jet? I need to find a manual!!!

Lets hope it does not have that dreaded EI,,, just pop the flywheel to get at the EZ to replace points that can B replace on the kitchen table while eat'n,, read'n the paper,,, and watch'n the news all at the same time in less than 15 min. ... just make sure you do not install the flywheel backerds...

to answer yer question,,, I would do a good carb clean'n... Its starv'n for fuel.... you should be able to stoke it up with propane to determine if its a carb mix issue....

I hear bout all carb problems a ignition problems,,, I don't buy it myself... I don't live in are dream world....

Its the one that hangs out in the float bowl,,, like a tractor but screws into the main carb body....

I think you would have to pull the engine to replace the points on the kitchen table LOL... Its not a front mount Hobo!!

In high school shop class we built a gocart. It had a motorcycle engine. It was a 5 on the floor...Foot clutch It was one bad machine..Dont sound like those guys were shifting that one....A 2 stroke in a go cart = 1 bad arse machine..

When was the last time you had a 6 HP Tecumpsey on yer kitchen table?

Was that the last time yer Ole Lady kicked yer ares?

Or, are you a glutton for punishment?

Clamp off the fuel line. Pull the main jet from the bottom of the fuel bowl.There is a small black colored round gasket on the jet. Make sure the main jet hole in the center of the jet is open. You should be able to blow though it. If not use a small piece of wire and air to open it up. Near the top of the jet is another hole (very very small, sometimes hard to see) drilled at an angle pointed down. Run a peice of small wire though this. If you want at this time you can pull the bowl off to check for dirt/water. Note the position of bowl before removing. Be carefull of the sqaure O-ring. If you get gas on it, it might grow larger. Wait a few days and it will shrink up or get a new one. Modern small engine carbs are very prone to what is called hunting/surging. The main jets are much smaller now to meet EPA clean air requirements. This is why there is no or limited needle valve adjusters as in the past. Clean dry fuel is very important these days. Takes almost nothing now to partially restict main jets.

I forgot to say no points, Most small engines have been electronic since 1982 or so. Lights are ran from another circuit not from magneto. Has no bearing on how engine runs.
Also because engines are ran so lean nowadays some hunting may still occur. Its how they accellerate (no stumble) and run under load that is important.

I also had a go-cart as a kid,built with a Yamaha 90 2 cyl 6 sp motor.Scary wasn't the word for it!!!Best thing to do first would be to clean the bowl,get some "Deep creep",which is Sea-foam in a spray can.Spray the "Creep"into carb,while giving enough gas to keep running,then spray full bore until it dies.Leave about 15 mins.,then start again.It will fog the area,killing every mosquito in area.I've done this on cars,lawnmowers,etc. with good results.---lha

Pulled the carb. Its pretty dirty. Quite a bit of trash in the bowl. I got some deep creep, new plug and a air filter. I will put the carb back on in the morning.

I left out the bowl was not on right. I would say it was twisted 1/4 from where it should be.

Didnt see this hole the first time I looked. Going to pull the carb again in the morning!!
