OT- Hearing

I posted about a year ago about information on hearing aids. I got a good many responses but most didn't think hearing aids helped much. I have had hearing loss for years but did not do anything about it. I thought about getting a hearing aid but kept putting it off. I've talked to so many butt holes on the phone I thought I would get hearing aids free (a joke folks). Anyway I went to the hearing doctor about ten days ago and also purchased a hearing aid. It is digital and automaticlly adjusts the volume (at least they told me that). I tell you I have a whole new world opened to me. I can actually here people now. In the past I kept asking people to speak up because of my hearing but generally they would not. With the doctor visit the cost was over 2 grand but so far I don't regret getting it. I just thought others may have hearing problems and want to know. Jerry

Hearing is very important to me and why I do not mind looking dorkey wearing hearing protection when working with machinery. esp chain saws, welding grinders, etc.

Some of us grouchy old d!nks are better off if we can't hear anyway. Chances are we're just gonna get p!ssed off over what somebody else has to say anyway,and if we tell'em so,they're gonna get p!ssed too. So...we're better off in a blisful silent little world.

Thanks for the good info. Personal experiences like yours are a lot more helpful than the 'testimonials' you hear from the sales people.

My dad, who's 83 now, got hearing aids but he didn't like them because he said they over-amplified the louder noises, so he put them away and hasn't used them. Whenever he misunderstands me I feel like pointing to my ears and saying "HEARING AIDS-USE THEM", but I'm not wearing his shoes. He tends to be 'economical' with his purchases so these might be lower end quality.Jim

I fix cataract surgery eqipment for a living. It's almost all elderly patients. The ones that seem the most confused and have a distant look in their eyes are the ones that can't hear. A fool does not protect their ears when banging on steel,shooting guns or running chainsaws and grinders.

The one I purchased did that at first but they connected it to a computer and turned it down a notch and I hardly notice any unusual noises. People also don't notice I have one on,

On the loss prevention side I keep those soft earplugs in the little jeans pocket so I always have earplugs,They will go right through the wash and stay in the pocket[usually].I pop them in when even walking through loud areas.The theory on loss is its a constant erosion of hearing and any time you can use earplugs is saving loss.Ive been on jobs where no earplugs [im talking earplugs and headset on top with hardhat] will suffice for full protection.One was a Babcock and Wilcox generator at a power house.It burned two million cubic feet an hour of natural gas.I think it was four 12 inch mains.The scream of the gas entering the boiler was unbearable with full protection.I know that job took some hearing away.
