OT - Internet Access

I'm moving "out to the country", used to get DSL thru my phone service, but not available where I'm moving. Any suggestions for reasonable priced service, my options are dial up or paying around $75 for satelite service, with the price of gas that isn't happening.

Did you make sure DSL isn't available? I moved to a new place and assumed it wasn't, but the neighbor/landlord informed me it did go past the house. Otherwise, slow-as-a-herd-of-turtles dial-up or satellite, which I found to be about $50/month after buying equipment. Search Wild Blue or Hughes Net. You may also have a new breed of internet sent over microwaves available in your area, but it's not any cheaper. Talk to your neighbors and good luck!!

I live miles out of town and still have DSL through my phone provider. It's getting to the point where DSL is available just about everywhere. Mine is $14.95 a month bundled with the phone or $24.95 if I got it without phone service.

I have an alternative too. If you have cable TV service, a good possibility they provide DSL also. Mine does but the service through the phone company (as a package) lowered my basic phone service monthly bill.

I have the microwave wireless internet. Here(nebraska) it's $30 a month. It's only 384k but its upgradable and its beats dialup and satellite for the price plus I don't need the extra cost of a landline of any kind. With a pay per minute plan on a cell phone I pay about $30-40 a month total depending on cell usage for internet and phone.

yep i checked when i got the new phone number. I'm going to check with the wireless providers as my sprint cell phone gets very spotty service where i'm at but friends altel and att seem to work fine.

Man, I oughtta show my phone company your rates. I pay $50 JUST for internet...probably another $20 for telephone. Heck, they charge more for dial-up than $14.95!!

Armed with ALL the numbers, you might not wanna do that!

My basic phone service with LIMITED long distance service runs $77 a month + the "bargain" dsl service. They get you one way or another, but they ALWAYS get you.

I live out in the woods and I get Verizon Fios, My town doesnt get cable or anything, for TV I have abc, and pbs, thats IT!!

They gave the whole town free intalation, digging trenches through pastures, under stone walls, etc

REAL fast for 35 bucks a month!! PHONE too

I don't know where you live, so I can't give you any good information on microwave internet. I have had it since February and am well pleased with it. I have the basic connection package and regularly connect at 640 KBS. My old landline was 40 KBS, so is a big difference. I also have TV bundled with it and the 2 together costs $73.99 per month. Installation and equipment were free and was a 5 hour job to install.
You can Google "microwave internet" and it will list your state and then will show all providers in your state and a map of their coverage areas.... Gene

Wireless seems to work here....
The local provider here is not what I'd call 100%, but it beats dial-up. It's probably 10 or more times as fast as 56K dialup. Costs about 50 bucks a month here, but we needed another phone line as it was to stay with dialup at 25 bucks a month and another 25 for the dialup itself... so we're not out anything and it's a ot faster. Just a bit less reliable. That's not a technology issue either. It's a company service issue.

I've been using wild blue since I moved out of town in June. Been pretty well pleased, its not cable but its comparable to DSL. Plus, here they want me to buy an area calling plan since I cant get DSL and not pay long distance (curses bell south).

Pros to wild blue: cheap 49.99 a month, less than 250 for equip and install, faster than DSL, outages are more frequent than cable but not as long.

Cons: frequent outages, only a couple of minutes but still... Cant use my ftp program to my server. It wont handle the ping rate of satellite. And, its still not as fast as cable.

Oh ok, I thought your phone and internet was $14.95 all together. I'm not so jealous now ; ) Heck, you can get a very good cell phone plan for a lot less than $77 a month.

In my area, there is no DSL, Cable or Cell Phone coverage. I’ll check on the "microwave internet” mentioned.
In the suburbs of Birmingham the demand for DSL far outstrips the available lines. One thing that ticks me off is Bellsouth (AT&T) has fiber cable at my serving cross box but they will not install the DSLAM box that is needed for DSL at the cross box.
I was warned by an installer that if I ever do get DSL (not) is not to let the bill lapse or that will snatch away the DSL to give to someone else and then you go on the waiting list.
My bill for long distance, local, internet dial up and my in town cell phone is $120 per month.
Oh, and I just got a notice that dial up is going to increase $7 or 8 bucks.
