Ot: Laser Bore Sighter

I was thinking about buying my dad one of these for christmas, the kind that looks like a bullet, then you buy adaptors for different calibers. He has the other kind that goes into the end of the barrel. He shoots a lot of groundhog rifles, .17, .223. .22 hornet, that kind of thing. Does anyone have one, how good are they, are they worth the money?

I"ve been looking at them and the ones that fit on and arbor that go in the barrel are really touchy according to what I"ve found. the ones that look like a artridge and have a laser in them are often made sloppily and don"t center in the bore.

The best one I found is made by Leupold and magnetically attaches to the barrel. It"s called a Leupold Zero Sight bore sight and it"s about $60 ($110 list??). Do a google search and you can find a lot of reviews of the various types. if I was going to spend money on a bore sight, I"d get the Leupold Zero Sight. (P.S.I don"t have any affiliation with Leupold.)

I'm no expert but I think they will get you on the paper but not a whole lot better. I bought a .17 HMR a few years ago and the dealer used one after mounting the scope and it was very ball parkish.

I gotta believe you are correct. Years ago I worked in a sporting goods store. I would mount scopes on rifles for people. They wanted them bore sighted as they were going hunting soon.

I quit trying to tell them that bore sighting was good for a start to sighting it in, but no substitute for fine tuning.

If using the type of bore sighter that is stuffed into the muzzle. Please in the excitement of taking the 1st shot with a new rifle. Remove the bore sighter from the barrel before firing a cartridge.

I've pulled a few stunned moves in my day but that isn't one of them.
A couple of months ago somebody sent a series of images taken of the range,around the area and of the patient being hauled out to the ambulance.
It was hurting looking situation.

That's been my experience. Have bore sighted a bunch, and then there was the fine tuning. I have one of the ones that plugs into the barrel, and you look thru the scope to see a graph chart. By recording the coordinates I can later do a quick recheck to see if things have shifted. Very useful. The laser ones don't provide that option.

Thanks All, I think I'm going with the Leupold magnetic bore sighter for him. My dad has one of those laser ones that fit down the barrel and it seems to be different every time you use it. I was bore sighting my .44 a few weeks ago and used it. I got it close at 25 feet, took it out and did it again and it was in a much different place.

Bore sighters are just another dust collecting gadget.

I've got a laser bore sighter.. and an optical one with a retical you look thru the scope at.

The optical one is great.. the laser one isn't even good junk.

I have sighted in many guns for friends and after heareing range or hunting reports.. they were right on... so my vote would be a good optical one. ( I think mine was a simmons.. model 1480 )
