Hello:

What is the best vaccination to eliminate/remove pink eye in cattle? A regular 7 way or antibiotic like LA 200 won"t do any good will it? Just wondered what you"all do to treat it in your herd.

Thanks!

LA 200 works pretty good for cattle that are in the early stages of pinkeye. If the eye is fully inflamed "pink with white iris" LA200 is less efective. For advanced stage pinkeye you should have a vet treat it. They often stich the eye shut to protect it and allow it to heal. To prevent pinleye I vaccinate all my calves and bulls with Piligaurd pinkeye triveiw. It works well in preventing pinkeye and lessens the severity if they get it. It should be given several weeks before pinkeye season. It will not help if the cattle already have pinkeye.

If you can get them through a head gate you can effectively treat even advanced cases by squirting 3 cc's of pennicillian directly on the eyeball. You obviously don't use a needle, just the bare syringe. You have to hold the eyelid open to ensure you get it directly on the eye.Three to five days in a row depending on how advanced it is is plenty.Abit more labour intensive, but very efective and cost efficient.pd.

Pinkeye has two primary causes. Bacterial pinkeye, Maxella bovis and a viral type from IBR. A 4 way respitory nnalert will prevent viral pinkeeye but will not cure it. Bacterial pinkeye can be reduced with the pinkeye nnalert but my field experience is that it causes about as much as it cures. LA 200 will treat bacterial pinkeye effectively but does nothing to control viral pinkeye.

I've adopted a holistic pinkeye strategy. Grass stems and seed heads irritate the eyes of grazing cattle so keeping pastures mowed and vegetative helps. Fly control reduces spread. I use fly tags on the calves, Ivermectin dewormer pour on in late June (which gives almost 4 weeks of complete fly control), and fly bullets on the mineral feeder. Lastly I use a custom mineral mix high in chelated copper and vitamin A to increase immune function. Calves with pinkeye get treated with LA 200 plus a 4 way respitory nnalert. Cows, I just let it run its course. Since I adopted this strategy I've gone from 8-10 cases in cows and up to 30 % of the calves (when I used the nnalert) to rarely a case in a calf (none since 2005) and 1-2 cases in cows each year.

Big 10-4 on that. The exact reason I sold my whiteface heard and went black. Course a couple of other reasons too but that was a big one. Course had baldies at times too and they all would have a black circle around the eyes on that white face which worked......or maybe the genes kept it from affecting them.

Usually a result of bacteria in dust. See if you can get "Terramycin -Pinkeye aerosol" a broad spectrum antibiotic for sheep and cattle.
made by Pfizer. If a bad case may have to stick a patch over the eye to keep the sun, dust and flies away.
Individual Animals should be isolated.

There's a yellow powder that comes in a puffer bottle that works with one shot if you get them in the chute. I don't have it right in front of me right now, seems like it's NFZ or something. I've had excellent luck with cows on pasture using Terramycin. I buy it in the powder form in a foil pouch, then mix it with water in one of those small hand pump garden sprayers, the one without the hose or wand. Mine are calm enough so that I can get close to them on the 4 wheeler. Just one shot in the eye with that usually does it. Of course that doesn't solve a long term problem like a nnalert would, but after I battled it for 2 years,we didn't have any last year.
