OT, Plastic car bumper fix.

The wife backed into a rock at the neighbors with the new Honda. It's got a plastic one piece bumper that got scratched up and has a crack in bottom part that runs under the car and it comes up about an inch or so on the bottom edge that's visible. What can I use to repair the crack? Is there a specific glue or epoxy that's used for this kind of repair. I'd like to make the repair myself as it's a small crack and then let a body shop fix the paint.

you can try a product made by wurth, replast plastic repair. it is a two part epoxy, but, there is a special gun and tip you need to mix it. the other choice is to plastic weld it. you would be better off letting the body shop do the repair as the materials are pretty expensive for a repair done at home. you need to remove and install the facia cover, say 2 hr labor, repair cover, 2 hr, repaint cover, 2.5 hrs + 1.0 clear coat. so about 7.5 hrs labor, our rate is 46 hr, 345.00 labor, 91.00 in paint and material, say 436.00 total. if you took the cover off and brought it to the shop, have them repair and repaint, and you can re-install it.

Google- www.eastwood.com . they have any thing you need for this repair ,even instructions if needed . At the Carwash we frequent there is a Fellow who does Bumper repairs, paint touch up,etc. Perhaps at your local Car wash they may have this service.

I repaired a severely damaged front bumper on my 95 chevy lumina with Gorilla glue. Local body shop suggested it.

The Mrs plowed our Honda CRV into the neighbour's car while backing out one day and caved in the corner of the bumper. Luckily, when we bought the car I cheaped out and got the base model with plain black bumpers instead of the body coloured treatment. That meant I was able to fix it by simply warming the bumper with a heat gun and working it back into shape. Paint never entered into the equation.

Unfortunately it doesn't sound like you're in the same boat. You may want to check out your nearest large auto recycler. Depending on how common the model and colour of your Honda is, you might get lucky and find a bumper assembly for less time, trouble and cost than patching up yours and then having a body shop paint it. If you don't mind driving like that a while, I'll bet something turns up given time.

As for having them do it, I haven't been able to find a shop willing to spend the time on small jobs like that. Most of them just want to replace entire panels with obscenely expensive parts and pass the cost on to you or your insurance co.

That is why I have $50 deductible it cost about $25 more per 6 months and it only takes one small fender bender in 10 years to pay for the difference.

You can contact Bumperman. I think they have a $100 Flat rate. They mostly do metal but they can do some plastic repairs.

I learned this when my teenage son was learning to drive:

epoxy something behind the broken pieces then touch up the crack with small bottle of factory paint, do not pay to have it professionaly repaired

reason: same spot likely to get hit again at least once

Did you redo the wiring on the tail lights to put on the newer one bulb style lights? Yours should have had a seperate turn signal and brakelight bulbs from the factory. The tail lights from a newer (99+ or thereabouts) have one bulb that does everything and are solid red with no yellow signal. With a little wiring they are a bolt on, somebody may have put aftermarket taillights for a newer truck on yours and goofed up somewhere in the process.
