OT: Redoing a wagon.

Hi Folks,
I just found and picked up an old wagon that needs some TLC. Everything is solid except the wood sides and floor. Just need to replace the wood and run some lights. Just wondering what kind of wood I should use foor the floor and walls. I have access to oak, pine, and I believe spruce. I was thinking to just buy 3/4" pine tongue and groove from our equivelant to HD but don't know if it is tough enough. I also have plenty of 3/4" exterior plywood. Seems like I read somewhere to stay away from the oak. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, what would be a good paint for the wood? I plan to paint it to match my IHC tractor.

Use the Oak, no nails and paint it with the same paint you use for the tractor

I just finished one that is probably 40 yrs old or more sold by Sears Roebuck. I put a pine floor on and stained with cedar colored house stain and put red sideboards along with the red (IHC) running gear. Since my tractors are the same color with black tires, and starter I painted the stanchhions black. Send me you email address and I will send you a picture.

If you are going to use the wagon for picking ear corn, I'd use the oak at least on the floor. Abrasion resistance is what you require on the floor. However, if it is going to be strictly for show---any kind of wood will do. It's great that you're fixing it up.

I would stray from the oak on the sides to avoid cracks. Tongue and groove flooring is good, and the sides can be anything you want. Most originally had pretty wide one-by pine looks like to me.

Longleaf yellow pine car siding is what a lot of grain boxes were made of. Lasts a long time in the weather and is strong, but that wood is getting tough to find. Ash is used on the floor of my hay wagon and it has removable sides made from yellow poplar.

Thanks everyone. Guess I should have mentioned that I'd be using it for firewood, hay, a little manure and dirt hauling. I'll look for the yellow pine, but in the worst case will use the T&G pine and a rubber stall matt on top when hauling the nasty stuff. Can't look any worse than it does now.
