OT-security cameras

Yesterday morning dog needed to go out. Took her for a walk towards the end of a very country, mile long dead end road. I noticed something white on the far side of the ditch. It kinda looked like one of our big feed bags got loose. Went to retreive, my eyes caught something brown in the bottom of the ditch. Someone had dumped 2 pit bulls, both shot once in the chest. 1 female, 1 fixed male in otherwise decent condition. We have more than our fair share of strays out here, both cats and dogs, but this was a first. County cops and animal control were called.

Naturally, wife is a bit upset, feels we need security cameras. There is a no outlet sign at the start. Since we live near the end, the only traffic that "should" pass our house is a 1-ton Ford pickup. Cops said to get a game camera, get lic plate numbers, they'll investigate. Im thinking the flash will bother drivers, potential liability issues, possible destruction of camera.

Any suggestions, recomendations on cameras, are appreciated.

TIA....don t. ....

Get a camera with an infra red flash. Almost not noticeable. Mount it in an unobtrusive place. Most folks don't notice details and it would likely be secure.

you would be surprised what those game cameras will pick
up even with no flash in very low light.

Also, with the towns permission of course,
hanging a
"Neighborhood Watch
Security cameras in use"
sign under the 'no outlet' sign
will have the 'casual' bad guys looking for another road.
(even if there isn't any camera)

Game camera will work find for what you need to do. Get an IR model no one will see the flash, just make sure to cover the red light on the front with some tape so you don't see it. Brand name I would recommend is Wild Game Innovations. You can take still or video with these models.
Good luck.

The infrared camera is a good idea, however, remember it is a stationary object, and it would be very hard to catch anyone in the act unless this is an ongoing event. I live down a road where there is very little traffic (normally), and since I am in the middle between the outlets to a paved road if is rare for any of my neighbors to travel by my place (they go out the closest outlets), and to top it - the road here is in a rough creek bottom. But it is a very attractive location for the "lower life forms" who like to dump, poach, road hunt, and you name it. I have caught a few in the act, and usually my mail box is their victim the next morning, especially since I live up a private drive, and cannot see my box. The issue I see, is unless the camera catches them in the act, law enforcement will do nothing, and simply getting a photo of the lone vehicle down your road that day/night is not enough. The reason I say this, is a few years ago I witnessed a vehicle drive slowly down the road, fire a shot, turn back around and drive at a high rate of speed by again, and when my wife and I went to investigate we found a deer that just had been killed on our property. This area is full of individuals who drive, shoot, then come back in an hour to claim their prize. We called game warden, he was just across the fence when the same vehicle came back which I identified. Problem was, I (mistakenly) made a statement that I did not actually see who fired the shot. Nothing was done. Point is, you need either witness(s) to the crime, or photo of the crime itself, then MAYBE they will prosecute (if the individuals have no "connections"). Around here it depends on "who you are". I vote for putting signs up indicating security cameras in use to give them a thought of getting caught. There are also fake cameras you can purchase for little money, then place away from the road, but visible, but cost is minimal in case they get shot off the mounts.
Example of dummy camera

Thanks all for your replies. We got a Wild Game IR camera. Got it hung in a tree to test still pics. I'll test the video function tomorrow.

Thanks again.....don t. ....

I have a game camera in a tree 1/2 way up my dirveway. I look at the pic's every few days. It's amazing the number of times cars have gone up my dirve. About 1.5 years ago the same car appeared several times. Called the sherriffs dpt. Check the lisc plate and had a talk with them. About a month later they were arrested for stealing farm equipment, chain saws etc. from my neighbor. But they left my house alone!

(quoted from post at 07:07:52 09/18/11) ... Someone had dumped 2 pit bulls, both shot once in the chest. ....

I'm an animal lover and in particular a dog-lover, but I have absolutely no love for pit bulls or their owners. The shame IMO is that the animals were not properly euthanized and were dumped on someone else's land. Sounds like someone got rid of their neighbor's troublesome pit bulls improperly.
Few things irritate me more than the pit-bull-craze that attract the typical trash-folk who want them for the wrong reasons.
I'm tired of hearing about children and others killed by this breed which has been improperly developed, and feel they should be categorized/regulated with other dangerous animals like snakes, large cats, etc.
Sorry to take this a little bit off-topic. I just hope others will begin to consider this problem.

Here's a link to a hunting web page I belong to about a trespasser I caught on my game camera's killing a deer on my property. I have 6 now keep them up in the mountains and around the cabin. Good luck with yours.
