OT Snapper lawn Mower

I have an old Snapper Comet Rear Engine Riding mower with an 8 HP Briggs engine. The clutch slips and grabs and the mower wont pull itself forward. Is there aeasy way to tighten this up? Any websites with discussion forums about these old mowers? I appreciate any help. Thanks.

adding to what old hippy said check the drive plate for warpage too...sometimes if the rubber drive wheel slips for awhile before being replaced the plate will warp from heat.

Very common problem on those old friction drives that they had. Back when the one I have ran about every 2 or 3 years we would have to replace those parts. Good machines but the drive clutch wear out in just a few years if used hard

If you look at the list of YTMag forums, you will see lawn tractors, where there are many experts to help you. Tom

Stand mower up on rear supports. It wouldn't be a bad idea to drain out oil because oil may run back into cylinder and make it hard to start when finished. Also drain or remove gas tank because it will leak gas out the cap when in this position.

You should have already bought a new disc. Remove old disc and put new one on. Work gearshift lever and foot clutch to see if everything is working, as others said check drive disc for wear or warpage, but I have never had that happen.

Take this opportunity to check oil in the 2 bullgear drives. The 1984 model i have has little plastic plugs that are best removed by grasping them with a pair of pliers and pulling them out. Fill with gear oil if low.

Sharpen blade, replace if needed. It made be possible to sharpen with side grinder while blade is on mower so you don't have to remove blade. If replacing blade use new bolts, nuts and lock washers if the nuts look too rounded off.

Grease blade bearing. As I recall, the grease fitting faces the rear of the mower. Grease front wheels.

Put mower on ground, put fresh oil in it, refill gas tank. Check oil in final drive occasionally. It should not be necessary to drain engine oil for a quick check of the finals. Probably need to put out a pan to catch gas spill.

Hald of the posts are about lawn mowers, lawn tractors, zero-turn mowers, etc. There are many small engine/transmission experts there. Try it, you will like it. Tom
