(quoted from post at 08:44:14 11/22/10) Just what I didn't want-snow. It's -4C and we got about 5cm on the ground and still falling APCRAY !!

Hmmm......what country are you in? I'm 64 years old and still don't know anybody that uses the metric system unless they are forced to.

Bob.......remember all that ARTIC AIR is coming from YOU and internal provinces. 1-cm yesterday morning, 2-cm more lastnite. Ice on the water trough this morning. Have they opened the runs yet at Whistler??? I got out the red-flannels but ever try to find yer "junk" when its COLD???.......the shivering Dell

That's a perception that probably doesn't bear up under scrutiny. Bet you know lots of folks that purchased a 2 litre bottle of soda recently and never thought twice about it. Or a 750 ml bottle of booze. As humans we really don't care what the units are once we become accostomed to seeing them in our daily lives. I'll bet even you intuitively know that you want a 1 litre bottle of soda for a trip in the car and not a 2 litre one. Wouldn't take 10 years for nearly everyone to become just as comfortable with meters for length and Centigrade for temperature if we made them the primary units used and moved the foot and Farenheit to the back burner. Within a short generation the foot and Farenheit could be gone completely.

When I look at a 1 liter or a two liter bottle of soda, I see the big one and the little one. I can pick which one I want without having to look at the amount of content printed on the bottle.

I've lived 64 years using the foot and Fahrenheit and I'll survive my remaining years doing so just fine.

My point exactly. And at this point in your life I'm not suggesting you are going to or even should change. What I am saying is that as a country we continue to operate with an arcane system of weights and measures that puts us at odds with the vast majority of the industrial world. And for no really good reason since change would be easy if we actually tried and quit piddling around.

Re: Metrics

And just think (back in the days!) when we could have looked right proud while talking to the guys (or girls) and said, "14" instead of "6."

Metrics ain't all bad.......

Not too OT, remember when the girls wanted to ride on our tractor!

Metrics - didn't mean to open a can 'o' worms, but, my kids (26 & 28yrs.) don't have any idea what an inch, foot or F is. Canada went Metric in the 70's. I'm 64 too and have no problem with it as you are dealing in tenths rather than the arcane 16ths and stuff. True story about one of the old duffers that had his regular spot by the door in a pub in Alberta. A tourist came in and asked "how far is it to Rocky Mtn. House?" The old guy says "I don't know since they changed it to metric " !!

I too am in Canada and I am 63 years old. I fought the metric system for years but being an auto mechanic I have had to give in. Vehicles now use metric nuts and bolts and metric specifications. I finally see why it is advantageous to use metric in everyday life but I still want to know how many miles to the gallon I get and not how many liters per 100 kilometers.

Multipy the Liters by .22=gals. Multiply the Kilometers by 5/8=miles, then divide gals into miles. I still do it because I can't get what's left of 'the little grey cells' to just accept 13 L / 100Kms (just an example) - I KNOW what it means and all but ......

Forgot to add; this is Imperial gallons (ie Canada, a US gallon is smaller) Canadian gallon =4.54L, US gallon =3.78 L Now my brane hurts !

I hate to remind some of you guys, but we are Americans (remember Gen. Patton ?) we lead not follow. When everybody else changes to something else, then and not until then will we go to the metric system....LOL

Yikes - that makes my brain hurt too!!

As a mathematician by training I understand the formula but the engineer part of me says solve for the unknown then simplify and reduce!!!!

MPG = 235.2 / (L/100Km)

Ex: 10 L/100Km = 23.52 MPG

TOH

PS> The overhead console in my Dodge Ram truck does it for me at the touch of a button....

PPS> that is for US MPG - for Imperial MPG the conversion factor is 196

Ummmm, MOST of the Industialized world uses metric, check the parts in your car. I will likely be wrong but the US and England are the only hold outs that I know of, AGAIN, check the stuff in your car (unless it is pre '77). Automakers and Machine Mfgs. have been using Metric for a LOONG time. Not trying to 'P' on your cornflakes, get up to date.

Thanks Mr. matha matician. That will take less button pushing on my (in the glove box) calculator. The wife's Malibu Maxx has the same gizmo on the dash - even tells you how far you gots left and how the oil is doin' (I'm only allowed to drive it on special occasions-like "I'm outta beer dumpling") :~)

The countries that do NOT use the Metric System are the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar (Burma).
They taught us kids the Metric System in the '60s so I am comfortable with it when I encounter it but prefer Miles, Feet etc.
