Neighbor showed up with his snowblower in the back of his truck asking for help. COuldn't get it to run. Is a 8 HP tecumsah. I drained the gas out and the carb bowl. Replaced the line from the primer bulb to carb (death by ethanol) Shot some carb clener thru the carb etc. Cleaned plug and put in some good fuel. Starts hard now and pops and pharts when running. Seems to be a little better under load. What can I do to get it to run better?
Thanks for any help

Pike;
Where da "H" ya been????
Sounds to me like, ya got to hit the sweet spot with the air to fuel mix. Not knowing what carb it has, it's kinda hard to say what your settings should be.
Top of my cranium, I'd say, you need more air and a little less fuel.
Just a guess!!!
Merry Christmas to you and yers!!!!

What i have found out about tecumsah engines the screw or bolt that holds the float bowl on has holes in it that get cloged up clean them real good and she should run much better

Hi Gary,
Been job hunting and down in my shop working on restoring a 68 Cuda Convertible.
I don't know what kind of carb it is. Has a tweekum in the bottom of the bowl, one on the side and one up top for governor linkage adjust I think.
Guess I will try more adjusting.

Merry Christmas to you and Les.

Sounds like the carb on my snowblower. Got a jet, dead center on the bottom (fuel) mix......one on the side (air) mix.
My settings....fuel mix...one complete turn out from stop
Air is at about one and a half out.!
If the engine surges at idle, play a little with the bottom of the bowl screw, for enough fuel to get rid of the surgeing.
Also sounds like the round can float.!!! I just had to do mine, due to letting the carb set with a little water in the bottom of the bowl. Froze the dang float to the bottom of the bowl, and put a hole in the float.
If that is the case with that one,........I have a spare float for the tecumsah carb....doughnut type float.
If ya can't find one handy....let me know and I'll send it to ya!!!

Edit button is not workin, so another post to ya.
Here is what the float looks like for that carb., if it is like mine.
Be dang carefull with the needle spring up inside of the bowl. DON'T bend that in any way......just stick the float back in with the needle attached.
Also be careful not the damage the rubber bowl seat gasket.

In other words.......Don't get ham-fisted in there!!!!!!

Had one that soundes like it ran the same way on a Sears lawn and garden tractor. Took it to a shop and the mechanic said it was running lean. He cleaned and put a kit in the carb and it runs pretty good. Tecumseh'a seem to be a little fussier than some to get them to run right. Good luck.

My Tec on a snowblower has a throttle shaft that is constanly binding or sticking and it either won't start or runs poorly because the throttle does not respond well when it sticks. Dissimilar metals and some moisture cause it to corrode.

Check to see if the engine has points and condensor, if it does, remove them and install an electronic ignition set.

If it already has an electronic ignition, check to see if the wires from the ignition are frayed or nut hold wire is loose.

Also check the magnetic field on the inner side of the flywheel, sand away any rust and corrosion with 200/280 grit wet paper

Ham fisted? Me?? Thanks,Gary for the generous offer.
I did finally get it. Recleaned the carb, banged on it with a BFH. Followed instructions (for a change), dialed her in and the neighbor was happily blowing White crap this morning. All is well on the frozen tundra.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas
