OT The Gout

Hello Since this forum has a healthy number of old persons on it I thought it would be a good place to inquire about Treatment meds for folks, like me who get an attack of the Gout. Yes I said attack as it could not be thought of in any other terms. Acute in the right knee and big toe. Am using stuff from the Quack that he said was not usually very effective AFTER the attack is fully entrenched. For those who have had it, I hope you do not have a recurance and for those who have not I would not wish it on my worst non-friend. What say you , old folks, any useful ideas that you have found over the years? Thanks Devious

Old??? I"m 46, got a bad case of the gout in my big toe two years ago, I suffered with it 4 about 5 days until I couldn"t stand it anymmore, even the bed sheet touching my toe was excruciating. Went to the doc and he gave me some horsepills. Toe felt better in a few hours and felt absolutely fine by the next day. It"s a stupid ailement but boy does it hurt!

OK I got it but Horse pills will not work down at the quacks office here so if you have the actual name on the bottle or prescription, it would be very helpful in getting some. Whatcha think? Devious

Actually I was not diagnosed, but was having a lot of throuble, with something like that in my feet.

I tried eating quite a few different things than I normally eat/drink.

Not sure what it was that helped it.

The best thing that I I thought helpred it, and I may be wrong, but I attributed it to, store bought, bottled Lemon Juice, added to the glasses of water that I drank.

Gout is the build up of uric acid, in places in your body, that it shouldn't be doing that.

Click on this link, and so some research my friend.

I will try to think more on this, and see if I have any more input.

Wait!!!!

Now I am remembering more!!!

I have just been thru 15 "Full Brain Radiation" treatments for pea sized cancer tumors, in my brain, I am running a little slower than normal right now, and they tell me it will get worse for 2 months or more, since I completed them Tue.

CHERRYS!!!!!!!

CHERRIES!!!!!!!!

Devious, I feel for you. I take Allopurinol daily for gout and if I still get a flare-up I start taking Indomethacin and it usually clears it right up. Good Luck with whatever you do.

Another home remedy that most gout sufferers swear by is lemon juice. Unlike most other gout home remedies, there is actually some scientific evidence to suggest that lemon juice is helpful. What does it do? Lemon juice prevents gout attacks by increasing the amount of calcium carbonate in the body. This calcium carbonate has been proven to reduce the amount of natural acids in the body, including uric acid.
Dunk, you are right again...Gonna try it..

Iam on the Cherry deal now with Cherry capsules and cherry juice and also the Indomethacian etal and it is still here but maybe getting a little better. Will try the Lemon juice also. Can t hurt anymore than it does. Thanks allfor the comeback. Devious

I used to take medication for my gout. I changed doctors and the new doctor told me to take Aleve. Take 2 initally and then one as directed on the instructions. It works great.

I have been gout free for 35-years.

Another name for gout is a red hot railroad spike being hammered into your right toe! Some have it other places, which might be worse. Anyway, I found a cheap, old-style anti-inflammatory called "Tolectin," even in a generic form, is terrific for gout. Some cannot take the other two traditional drugs, which I cannot because chemo messed up my liver and kidneys five years ago. Good luck. Just hearing the descriptions brought back bad memories!

I, luckily don't have gout, but have known many who have.several have told me that certain foods will help, and others will make it worse.Look on line to find those that cause flare-ups,and avoid them.good luck!---lha

The best thing I have found to relieve pain is Arthrotec 75mg. You will need a prescription for it. I have a weakness for liver puddin". (it"s a carolina thing) It"ll send me running (or crawling) for the meds. Uric acid settles in the joints and looks like glass shards under a microscope...

had it twice in the right big toe-once in the left elbow-i finally got on allupurinal daily.
the left elbow left me with occasional numbness
just like you hit your crazy bone.all 3 attacks
hurt like nell-worst than any tooth ache you could ever have-probably good thing i have dentures now.haven't had any for a while-but am
going to remember the cherries.
Good Luck,
R.L.

I have had gout several times. It is horrible!! I have fond 2 things to help. A glass of cranberry juice every day. I was gout free until I ran out and ate 2 bowls of bean soup. Finally the doctor put me on Allpurinol. Ben gout free for 2 years.

This is Gillray's Gout Devil. Those that have met him know this is an accurate picture!!

I've suffered from gout for about 5 years now. Most of the time gout free by being careful of what I eat and drink. Not easy this time of year, since some of the best seasonal foods, such as turkey, are the worst for bringing on gout.

The wizards that know about these things say that food high in purines will form the uric acid that brings on gout. Avoiding them will help avoid gout. Foods are also acid or alkaline based, and I try to eat a regular amount of alkaline foods to counteract the acids in the other foods and keep a proper Ph in the body. Cherries, apples, blueberries, raspberries are all alkaline forming - perhaps that's why they're helpful in treating gout.

For the inflammation I will also take a Naproxen pill, which is a non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drug, also used for pain relief. Some say that taken early in the inflammation it helps reduce the size and severity of it.

People react differently to purines and uric acid. Some will get gout, others will not. I want to stay off any daily drugs for it as long as I can, so I watch what I eat and drink. Winter time seems worse for bringing it on, so I have to be more "extreme", such as not having beer on a daily basis. Better that than the Gout Devil.

I recommend anyone suffering from gout read up on it and make some adjustments in your diet. Probably better for you too, even without gout.

Glad to hear you finished treatments, hope they help, was thinking about you other day, talking to my friend doing chemo for lung cancer - he is done for month and then recheck to see if shrunk enough for surgery Mark

Diagnosed with gout in 1973, then learned father and brother also suffered from it. I take PROBENECID 0.5gm 4X DAILY. Haven't had an attack since 1973. However twice young doctors changed my meds to a new one and I went to the ER with an allergic reaction for each. Personally I haven't had a fresh pork chop or fresh roast or ham since 1973. Do not drink. Your results may vary.

Tart cherry juice. Works very well for some people (like me).
I buy frozen concentrate from this company.

Mark, they shrunk the tangerine sized lung cancer tumor in my lung down to about the size of a dime, with the Chemo. (Good thing!)

It came back as "mets" in my brain, just what they expected.

I have just been thru 15 "Full Brain Radiation" treatments for pea sized cancer tumors, in my brain, I am running a little slower than normal right now ....

That's bad , cuz neither one of us was too fast when we could hit full speed , wink .

Glad to see your still in a forward gear though . I have not had any medical problems and some days I am in neutral , he he .

I used to have bouts with gout a couple times a year ,till my father-in-law told me he takes Allopurnal for his gout. I ask my doctor about it,and have not had any flare ups in the three years I have been taking Allopurnal. Ask your doctor about it.

Not sure what you define as "old"...I'm 68...if that qualifies, I'll tell you that, whenever I have an attack of gout, I take Indomethecin (50mg capsules) prescribed at 3xday. Never have to take more than 3. Don't get it often, but when I do, it's debilitating.
