Over /Under Question

On the 2 speed Hydra Power, if the low side quits working, you can run in direct, not using the low side and get along OK. My brother has a 1800 and the low side has been out for about 10 years. On a 3 speed Hydra Power, if the High side (overdrive) is getting bad, can you run it using under and direct without causing any problems? Just wondering. Chris

Hi, John It's in my 1969 1850. It has a vibration and whine when you put it in overdrive. Works great in direct and under. I've been using it this year, just don't use overdrive. Will I do any harm to the Hydra Power by running it this way? It has 18.4X38 rears on it, so it goes almost as fast in direct as my other 1850 (2 speed) does in direct. Just getting the other 1850 going again and not ready to tear this one down yet, but would like to keep using it. Chris

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE PLANET UNIT IS BAD THATS PART OF THE OVERDRIVE , I WOULD PULL IT AND REBUILD , THE MORE YOU RUN THE MORE DAMAGE THERE WILL BE , WHEN THE PLANET GOES IT CREATES A LOT OF FILINGS

Pull the plug and see if there are metal parts or filings,if not just use it.The same gears are used for over and under drive,so its more likely the over clutch than the gears.Thirty years ago we finnished the planting season with one that had lost over and under. Two of the four bolts holding the gears together backed out the others sheared off and the bolt parts just fell to the bottem.

I agree with Terry. The more you run it, the more and more dollars you will throw out the window.

I totally agree with e and Terry, if it's doing anything thats not right, yank it and fix it. The filter will catch a lot of metal so there may not be much evidence in the oil.

I have heard of several lucky folks that have made them last until next year, but I believe there is a greater unlucky count.

If you don't have the time for a fix, sent it to TFE.

Don't be like me, murphy caught me with bad weather on the horizon and a terrible crunching sound. My o&u just had too many hours on board.

WHAT HAPPENS IS THE SUN GEARS CHEW THERE WAY INTO THE PLANET CARRIER, THATS WHAT IVE FOUND MAKING THE WHINING NOISE IN MOST UNITS , 2ND CHOICE IS THE LITTLE BEARING IN THE BACK, ETHER WAY PULL IT AND FIX ANOTHER PROBLEM IS THE INPUT BEARING IT GETS ALOT OF SIDE THRUST ON IT IN LOW RANGE SIDE
