overheated case 830 diesel

I was running a pto generator with my 830 diesel. All was going well for 12 hours until I lost power, so I walked outside to see what was going on. Got out to find the tractor in a cloud of steam with coolant dripping everywhere. I got looking at it and the bearing it the water pump went up and it slid forward, pushing the fan into the radiator. The fan punched a hole in the radiator and then the tractor overheated and cut out. I looked at the temperature gauge which goes to 260 degrees and it buried every bit of that. I ordered a new radiator and water pump/fan and the engine still cranks over. I have not cranked long enough to start it but think that it will start. Do you think that this would do any damage to the engine. Thanks

I'd be very concerned about cracked heads. Cracked sleeves are very possible also. Like Doug says, you won't know until you fire the ol'e girl. Keep us posted.

The radiator should arrive thursday and hopefully the water pump and fan should come firday so I can get it back together during the weekend. I will keep you posted on how it goes.

While your waiting for the new parts, I would plug up the lower hose, fill it with water and check for bubbles. That way you will know if you have cracks. Leave the belt off and have the thermostat out. It wont hurt to run it a short time.You WILL need a new thermostat if it got that hot

So let me get this straight, plug the lower hose fill with water and look for bubbles at the top or am I completely wrong. I will try to start it tomorrow, since it is 24 degrees and snowing today. By the way I ordered a new thermostat as well.

The 730 gas I am restoring spent alot of time running an unattended corn dryer, my Dad bought and installed a system to shut off the engine if it got hot or lost oil pressure. I have know idea what brand or if they are still available, but it might be worth checking out.

pistons most likely scored, and possibly head damage.. . why do you think it stopped? then when it cooled off it loosened up and you can crank it. might not even have compression now. i would concentrate to see if its runnable first.

Running the generator is not something this tractor does a lot, only when it snows and we loose power which doesn't happen much around here. If I could find one at a good price I would certainly consider it, I don't want this to happen again.

Luckily the wobbly water pump broke both fan belts and they got tangled around the crank really hard. I had to spin the engine backwards to get them off. Since it was only slightly above idle at the time I think that was the main reason it cut off. It certainly has some compression left, won't know more until I dig it back out after this snow and try to start it.

Forgot to say the I also cranked it a little while still hot, 220-240, just to see if it would, cranked lust like always.

I would check the engine oil for any sign of water witch will look like white milky slime on the end of the dip stick after setting over night..Be sure to change the oil and filter even if it's not milky due to the high heat

I have Murphy switches on most of my equipment. It gives you low oil pressure and high heat protection. My one tractor had an 'idiot' light for oil pressure that was not visible during the day with the sun on it. One of my units has a timed override. That way you don't have to hold down an override button until the oil pressure comes up. You can get these at wreckers most of the time You can set them to 'kill' at the temp. and pressure you want. On a diesel with manual shut off you will also need a fuel shut off valve that operates on 12 volts. Good luck with the "hot" Case.

Tuff break ,, Murphy switch ...after repairs made , Lucas oil additive and fuel stabilizer might help get that engine back up to normal ...

I run lucas fuel stabilizer in the winter anyways and will get some oil additive. As soon as I get it running I plan to change the oil and filters since they were coming due to start with. I finished removing the radiator and plugged up the bottom line and went to start it today. I forgot that the trans cooler lines(case-o-matic) would leak fluid, so I stopped before I had time to start it but it was sputtering and I really believe that it would have started. I am sure the cold (26 degree) didn't help either. Then I went and removed the water pump. Now I am just waiting on the parts to arrive and hopefully can get it going this weekend.

Cole , i am prayin 'the 830 is still plenty healthy , cold weather makes a difference ,,This is what happened to me When My 95Cummimns only had 100,000Miles ,hit deer/re4pair shop redone the hood /new radiator/ grill shell ect. .. called me at noon one day , said your truck will be done at 4 PM , ..Looked Great , everyone said She is ready to go . that cold evening 30-40 degrees, started driving home some 18miles on interstate , NO HEAT... ,, temp guage was slow to climb ,, then started to the hi side in last 2 miles ,..SHOP NEGLECTED TO ADD ANY COOLANT ,. got to next exitand left CUMMINS runnin' while I filled a 2 liter bottle with water and poured it In , by that time temnpgauge was pegged and I was worried .. the exhaust was burning so clean you could breathe it for air ,. Did that About 15 times over 5 minutes ,.. cooled down nicely .. called body shop told them what happened ,
took truck back for antifreeze next day , Very Worried shop owner was certain he would have to buy me a motor, diesel mechanic Said it did not hurt it, cold weather made the difference . that was 300,000, trouble free miles ago miles ago, still getting 20+mpg ,

Good to hear, I hope she is alright too. All the parts, except the radiator, arrived today. As I pulled the water pump apart less then half of the balls were actually in the bearing, the rest were stuck in grease around it. Should have an update if I get it running next weekend.

After spending a whole day putting it back together it started like there was nothing wrong. Thanks everybody for their help.
