When you are a Tool & Die maker working close tolerances, you keep your tools clean. I do have period mics that look used but that's because I bought them used. So you know about Machinists classes, that's great. If, however, you knew much about metrology, you would know that none of the tools shown in my picture are capable of measuring into millionths. You know, that's what I don't like about this forum. You older guys ( I am 72 ) treat posters as if they are total idiots. That offends people! Eventually they will go away. I was under the impression that you wanted this forum to grow. Am I wrong? Go watch a racing engine put together and see what their tools look like. Not everybody works in filth, sir.
Since I am offended, perhaps I just need to stop coming here.

Well as it sets here we are now down to just one machine shop . in the whole county . where there use to be one or more in each town . Three closed up last year , the two that use to be in town closed 20 plus years ago . Up north of me in the next county I don't know who all is left . Hartford closed Industrial machine closed and they were the big boys that also were engine parts ware houses plus a walk in large parts store . My one close friend that have have been friends with since the early 60's passed away some 20 years back now . That shop was the best with the latest machines and the only machine he did not have was a crank grinder . Dick had a massiv heart attach and was vary limited on what he could do and tired his best to get his one kid involved but he had no interest . Dick offered it to me But there was no way i could come up with a 1/4 Mill plus build a new shop in a better locatin and comply with all the B/S involved in a automotive machine shop between dealing with state and EPA requirement . . While i could run every machine he had and do all the machining operations the line bore took me longer to set up and do then when he did it . many times i would take something up and need it fast and Dick would just look at me and say you know where the machine is i have to get this job out so go for it our he would have me finish up what he was working on and do what i had brought in usually a line bore . But one evening his heart gave out . I am not sure what happened to all the machines . His wife never said .
The trade is a dyeing art . Even the one machine shop and speed shop closed up due to lack of work . The kids of today don't want to Build and engine and go play on the drag strip and not many play in roundy round . The older farmers around here are fading away and the ones filling the gap don't want OLD they want new and bigger iron . We have just one guy that does electrical where there use to be one in every town , One radiator shop and PUCKER up when you deal with him .

for that dog that bites his leg every morning. Not sure
how well you can judge character ..long distance.. but

Yup i done saw that , nice tools . Nice clean play pen . BUT you are a tool and die maker NOT and engine builder . You come on here and stat asking questions . Willingly i offer my YEARS as and engine Builder experience . Yes i can BUILD from MILD to wild and have done so many times . Am i nationally known NOPE don't want to be . Did i say you were STUPID NO . But what i can do is make and engine run far better then factory . At one time everybody wanted me i was getting calls to no end to come to work for so and so . I was asked to come to work for a Chrysler Plymouth dealer and was there EXPERT on performance and i made the cars RUN . I was asked to take over the Ford drag Club performance end and the two dealer run cars and make them RUN . I can work on diesels . I have built engines you only may have seen in the books . I can do the machine work and get it down to 2 tenth of a thouw . Now as to your field NOPE dumber then a box of rocks as i never had to do that . But what i can tell ya in all the engines i have built and run NONE have come apart . and in my 30 plus years of working on I H tractors i have NEVER had a COME BACK . I have been on this site now probably LONGER then the rest and helped a ton of guys . YUP i am a grouch and take No B/S i am vary OCD on my work . NON of the ones that jump in make there sole living off fixen other peoples problems .

I don't really disagree with anything YOU have said (basically, fix it right while it is out). I am aware of your reputation, but I have always thought you were relatively polite to me. Even so, I would think you want new people to feel respected and welcome, and would encourage your peers to do the same. Otherwise there would be no one left to whom you could impart your experience. In that scenario, your experience would not be worth much. Its only valuable if you can pass it on.

Well mine don't look that good anymore , Doing mobile repairs and having your tools riding around in a truck in all weather and setting outside in the winter takes the shine off of them . when i was a kid working for a construction company just getting my fee wet the owner Bought me a new company truck and every tool in the Mac catalogue along with OTC tools to put on the truck . As i was NOW full time and everyone that was full time had a company truck And TOOLS . I not only had tools but a Hobrat 250 amp DC welder and a Gardener Devenver air compressor that would run anything you hooked to it ever two rock drills i had OTC hyd. pullers up to 100 ton for pulling drive sprockets off Big cat dozers , ya never lived till ya pull one of them puppys and hqave a 100 ton puller maxed out and NOTHING moves till ya give it a couple wacks with a sledge hammer and things go flying . . In one year of riding around in the company truck they did not look brand new . When i was home my truck sat in what use to be the carpenter shop at the main shop complex and sat in no less then 60 degree warmth . To this day i still use Mac tools for wrenches and have then from 1/4 up- to 2 inch , you may laugh at my choice of sockets BUT i have never broken one and they are Craftsman and Some snap on . ON the 06-86 there is one bolt that requires a 9/16 12 point and that bolt has broken many Mac , snap on, S K and PROTO i have never broken one of my 9;/16th craftsman either removing or replacing it , that socket was bought new in 1964 when i first started collecting tools on my own .

well i am am not imtimidating you! just posting what i saw. not meaning to be taken the wrong way, then this red guy comes i n and adds more
fuel to the fire. and yes i know them tools are just the ordinary tools used in engines. but it struck me funny why are they so clean. i like
clean also! and work very clean on engines. its just the post that u said u spent half your career measuring. too many know it alls here
that dont know what will work and what will not work and look everything up before. posting. there is no filth in my jobs.

and yep i am an old retired grouch also, i went to school for my mechanical red seal ticket also and my stuff is self learned. i give short answers cause i would think the other guy knows mechanical also. i dont have time to sit in from of the lap top and type pages and pages. in other words its just like the shop manuals. you are required to have a clue when reading them. and also teachers dont give you a pat on the back when you answer wrong. i took enough lip biting in my time .

It could have easily been taken as you calling him out as if ..he is blowing smoke up our butt.. has brand new tools that basically look unused and we are supposed to believe he is making these precision measurements because he claimed to have worked a job that required him to ..measuring into millionths.. so hopefully you can see how it could be taken as a shot at the OP. He said he was ..offended.. so he must have been seeing it the way I thought it could be interpreted. Many times I have thought your posts were a little edgy, I realize it could be your style but to someone on here that is fairly new it may put their guard up. All I can recommend is think about what a reply adds to the post. I will also have to live by what I am throwing out. I probably could have left this unsaid but I felt I should put up a bit of explanation of why I came back with that reply.

Used red: your replys are always thoughtful and I remember that you were the first to welcome me to this forum. You are the best! BTW, just had a conversation over the phone with an "Engine Builder" in the area where the tractor is being assembled. His advice basically validated my experience and instincts. He told me the best course is to install the sleeves and THEN measure piston fit as well as ring gap. From there, we are either good to go or at worst he hones the sleeves to fit my pistons or track down some oversize pistons if needed. This resonates with me and I feel settled moving forward. Thanks to EVERYONE who took interest in this thread!
